I've never understood why people consider his art good when at best it looks like a tenth grader drew it.
I'm currently reading Blame and it looks much better and cleaner than this (and Sidonia to some extent). Now all the backgrounds are lightly bordered white mess. What happened to Nihei considering that Blame was his first?

Nope, he regressed. Nihei has one strength and one strength only. That is his art. He knew how to draw fantastically well. The art in Blame is some of most amazing of the last 2 decades. It has the same kind of detail that pre-horse-cocksucking-hentai Shirow had in his mangas. To continually draw to that kind of level is hard and maybe Nihei has had enough. He embraced the "white design" phase of Sidonia and that is now his art style. In the end we lost another great artist.

Is it been confirmed somewhere that this is a oneshot? The last page says something along the lines of "The boy's journey begins. Towards the Doll country" instead of just "end".
In any case the setting could be interesting (wonder if he took inspiration from Lost Planet, as he used to play it) and, at least with this chapter, the story makes me think of Net Sphere Engineer, with the girl traveling in order to prevent disasters.
Hoping for no harem bullshit and for his art to go back to being at least decent over the years.

Looks like he got better at drawing people, and worse at drawing backgrounds. Personally, I preferred the backgrounds. Nihei's obsession with architecture is what made him unique.

Personally don't like this one at all, twintails and thighhighs don't mix well with whatever is going on with the rest of her, and it's nowhere near as intimidating an introduction as it looks like it wants to be.
Generally I think I like his older female characters a lot better than his new ones. >>14215386 and >>14215396 look almost factory-fresh compared to some of the women in Blame, who often were just as fucked-up, half-repaired and cobbled-together as the dudes, and generally were a lot meaner-looking than that Cibo who looks vacant as hell and Sanakan who looks like she's about to ask Killy to please be gentle with me, sempai~.
I think a lot of it is the eyes, his old art had WAY different ones. Everyone in that series looked like they wouldn't take shit from anyone.
Blame! and Biomega had some god-tier designs.

Blame! volumes 7-8/9 were where his art was at its finest. Very architectural and spacey, the faces also looked pretty good. I also like some of the weirder Biomega chapters art wise, it's where the organic style started but the detail and shading were still there.

I'm pretty bad at talking when it comes to stuff like this but I'll give it another shot. It's got nothing to do with being an edgelord and darkness for the sake of it, I just like the later Blame! aesthetic and associated character designs a lot more than I do his later works like Sidonia and this. It was like a giant old factory that had been abandoned and was slowly falling apart and being stripped for parts, and the occupants matched it.
My specific complaint about the female characters was just what >>14220589 said and >>14220423 touched on, I just think his newer character designs - especially the women - have lost a lot of what made his Blame ones so good, a bunch of which was in the faces and especially the eyes. 'Moeblob' is too harsh I think but the influence towards something cuter really seems to be there.
This is totally subjective of course, and I'll admit I'm super-biased because Blame was like the second or third real comic I ever read that was any good at all.

ABARA was Nihei at his prime. Best artwork combined with cohesive plot, probably thanks to the fact that it was a short so he didn't get to get bored with it like with Blame! or Biomega and didn't drop it in the middle.
