I'm still trying to get over the fact that Sengoku Era Japan had mecha technology. It's the ONE thing that still detracts my enjoyment of the show (it gnaws into my mind every episode), but I just imagine it that somehow our MC and Hime gundamjacked one of the invading demons. Hopefully they get into how they acquired the Kuromukuro in the first place, if only to give me peace of mind.
Overall, I actually like the characters a lot, especially the MC. He doesn't do crazy things just for the heck of it, and once he has truly grasped his reality, he settled down. Pretty much he's the idealized samurai archetype, which ironically is severely underrepresented in the anime world.
The one reaction that bothered me though was blond girl freaking out getting groped... if she really was that skilled, her training would've made her hold even tighter, possibly literally choking the MC to death.

One of the first lines of the show has her teacher calling her ability and effort sub-standard and her ambition stupid, she puts "Mars, Mercury and Jupiter" down as desired jobs on her career application form, appears to legitimately believe Mars has canals as well as river terraces, never looked in to whether they had or not and thought proof they didn't was a cover up. Her friend thinks both she and her Mom are forgetful and she herself openly admits she's being stupid. And that's all in the stuff establishing her within a few minutes of the show's opening. She's contrasted in this by her Mom (a UN scientist who her teacher says is acting like her daughter is the same as her) and the French loli, who is a grade skipper who has what she wants and is working at the UN.
The show is actively looking to make us aware she's kind of ditzy and silly. It points it out. She is not supposed to be an average teenager girl. Yes, some teenagers (male and female) are ditzy and silly, but not all of them and not even the average of either sex. I wouldn't go so far as to say she's retarded, but she's definitely kind of dumb and that's fine. It's part of the point in fact. I'm not sure why you'd be denying this when the show wants to establish that as a base to build off of.

So far it's a low key show about a lazy, spacey girl, who gets thrown together with a serious time displaced samurai, and has to fight giant invading alien robots. Hijinks ensue. The comedy so far has translated surprisingly well, the action while nothing special is competent, and the big strength has been the characters, and the low key setting. The mecha action is enough to keep you interested, but the main appeal is the odd couple main pair bouncing off each other, and the humor of the time displaced samurai reacting to the lazy mc's laid back world. It's also very good at playing it's jokes straight.

26 episodes can be both a blessing and curse for Kuromukuro (plus any other similar length series).
The pro is that the writing will have plenty of time to build up and develop the various characters and relationships, as well as the core mysteries of Kennosuke's past, Yukina's dad and the aliens' motives.
The cons is the risk of the main plot getting stretched too thin to fit the allocated length, which could lead to unneeded fanservice/fluff moments to pad the episodes (like in Utawarerumono 2). There's also the risk of the writers dropping the ball with the plot, especially in the later half which leads to an unsatisfying or badly plotted ending (like how Valvrave ended). Not to mention risk of animation quality dropping...
(Times like this you wish the anime industry could make concessions for irregularly numbered cours, like 1 season having 19-22 eps similar to some K-dramas. That way the writers still have plenty of room to tell their story, but not so much that they get lost trying to tell it.)

Utawarerumono 2 is a rare case where the director deliberately chose the sillier parts (or even make some silly parts himself) from the game to be put into the anime instead of adapting the content that is more interesting, meaningful and more useful for the plot (not to mention the lackluster execution). It’s as if the director intentionally trying to make the anime fail, which I think he succeeded. It being 24-26 episodes has nothing to do with it.

Valvrave’s story was already bad, silly and ridiculous from the start. It’s just that the first half still had some mysteries and didn’t give us all the answers and kept us guessing and speculating that it gives the illusion that it’s better than the second half. It being 24-26 episodes has nothing to do with it. The bad ending is just icing on the already messed-up cake.

24-26 episodes is actually an ideal number for a (competent) animation team (with enough budget) to make a consistent mecha show, art-wise. Gundam 00 (each season), Code Geass (each season), G-Reco, Gundam Build Fighters/Try, Sidonia (2 cours), Majestic Prince, etc all look pretty good and consistent.

It really depends on the story/writing. Some stories can easily fill 26-100+ episodes (Zetsuen no Tempest, Fullmetal Alchemist, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Last Exile, Arslan Senki, Gundam 00, Patlabor, etc), while other stories are already struggling to fill the 12-25 episodes (Dai Shogun, Nobunaga the Fool, etc). As a mecha aficionado, I can say with confidence that mecha series need at least 24 episodes to decently explore its story coz most mecha involves a world that is vast and filled with characters from various places of the world/universe they’re living in. Mecha series with only one-cour (12-13 episodes) which succeeds in telling a whole story in a good manner are exceptions rather than the rule. And no, some Gundam OVAs that took place in UC universe and Code Geass Akito don’t count coz they’re more sidestories that do not need to build their universe from the ground up as the main Gundam & Code Geass series already did that for them.

Good episode, I like the consolidation they did of the characters and the setting before the action scene. It's not incredibly detailed or realistic, but it does a little more than a lot of anime. Stuff like Kenny having to learn more about history, getting an electronic dictionary to look up the very many new loan words he obviously wouldn't know, him calling the Not-Corefighter his "horse" and making "yee haw" sounds people do when riding horses, the almost logistical nightmare it is to transport such a massive thing through urban areas (having to take out street signs and all that as well). I like things like that, they've clearly thought about it a bit. I'm glad this is 2 cour, hopefully they'll be able to flesh out the setting and characters even more.
Looking forward to the action scene next week, I'm digging the designs, and while the CG isn't insanely detailed, the way the mecha move is very nice in my opinion.

There's a science-fortress and a little French girl who is a genius soldier with a protective butler pilot. Yukina's dad, who mysteriously disappeared, warned Earth about ancient alien invaders (sounds like Great Mazinger just a little bit) and Yukina's mom is a scientist at the science fortress. Also they go to school.
