Chikane didn't do the reset, Himeko did. Well she did in the manga anyway, it's explained that the surviving priestess is the one who restores the world or something. The manga has a lot more backstory and information regarding several things, it can be both clarifying and confusing. In the anime it looked like the reset happens automatically, or maybe Murakumo does it.

Not really, it's just Kaishaku recycling the characters for a new series. They do it all the time, "Chikane" has been reused in like four of five of their series I think, "Himeko" a bit less so. Though Kaon and Himiko actually behave pretty much the same as Chikane and Himeko, while in some of those other series they just reuse the designs but the characters act completely different.
I guess you can headcanon that it's an alternate timeline or another universe reset or whatever if you really want to, but there's no real indication of that.

The story is pretty simple, I don't see why they would have any problems with implementing it. All they would have to do is come up with some way for the world reset to not happen in the end.
And yeah, you'd only be able to get Murakumo as a unit when they finish the plot of the show, but they could finish it early if they wanted to. Not every series' plot needs to be stretched all the way to the endgame.

It didn't go "full hetero" so much as it just had a lot of hetero fanservice. As in, Chikane was portrayed as aggressively gay for Himeko, but she often ended up in situations where she was groped by men or was forced to strip for them because Himeko was being held hostage, or tried to seduce a guy because his girlfriend asked her to test his loyalty or whatever. And she never wore panties and licked popsicles erotically. Basically Kaishaku tried to sell that manga entirely on Chikane fanservice.
