I haven't watched a lot of Delta yet because I like to let a couple of episodes build up then marathon them in blocks. But I hear this show introduces new alien races and new civilizations.
How much new world building is there in the series so far?

Anyways, world building...there are shoutouts to previous shows and the cultural impact of their characters; Freyja mentions Minmay and Fire Bomber as inspiring her to get into music (even when her people were trying to cut themselves off from earth culture), we see a "Ranka beach" in the recent episode, and so on. I'd say its pretty good on the world building front.

Yeah, it was a lot of fun researching it for an essay. Helps that my schools's religion class was actually the 'Let's study various religions' subject in high school rather than the 'Jesus Love You!' drek that most local schools got.

When Japanese people say that they're atheist they don't mean that they don't believe in religion or any form of spiritualism, they mean that they don't believe in God or gods. Buddhist and Shinto traditions are still tightly interwoven with Japanese culture and most people believe in spirits, ghosts, the soul, reincarnation, karma, or other things like that. It's not as rigidly defined as western religion and people are allowed to believe as little or as much as they want without much judgement. On a related note, Astrology, blood types, and fortune telling are all really common, especially with women.

Alto didn't just have a passion for flying, he was trained in, and above average, use of the EX Gear, which the 25 uses as a control system.
He basically had the equivalent of 100 hours of microsoft flight simulator, plus hang gliding experience. Its still not actually the same as flying a plane for real, but its as close as you can come without actually putting your butt in the seat.
I get the impression that Hayate is never going to be anything more than 'competent' as a pilot, but his skills will shine through in battriod mode. Messer is the superpilot.

More complex tools would probably not be viable, nor would any electronic or chemically dependent tools. But you could, say, use it to automatically apply 'patches' onto damaged parts of the ship, to stop things like air or fuel leaks.

I could see that being true, if pinpoint tech gets to that level of advancement. Maybe they don't make the barriers stronger, just smarter. As in, the barrier is created at an angle instead of a flat wall directly intercepting the force. You hit it with a beam, and the barrier is generated in real time so that your attack hits it and most of it 'splashes off' instead of being tanked.
With projection tech, you also have much more flexibility on where you can project pinpoint barriers across your craft, giving wider coverage.
Ranged weapons are not ENTIRELY useless, in that strong weapons can overwhelm them by force. But you need to be using the right anti-barrier arsenal, and you need multiple direct hits (straight shots that don't give the pinpoint system any easy way to deflect the impact/energy) in a short enough amount of time that you overstrain the pinpoint system.
Pinpoint-weapons end up being the easy solution, since you just ram your pinpoint into their pinpoint. Which, all other things remaining equal, usually ends with your offensive pinpoint and their defensive pinpoint racing to burn out the other, until both sputter out at more or less the same time. It craps out both of your defenses at once, and then you just blow them away with another weapon. If you want to win that race, you blast them with your gunpod as you close into melee and soften them up, so their shields crap out before your weapon does.

Folding has always been inconsistent. In SDF it created a huge field and then disappeared. Plus has small portals and particles. 7 had them just zap in/out of place. Frontier had the large portals that are now standard it seems.

Its a plot point, after City 7 folds away, that they manage to find it due to a chunk of asteroid that was occupying the space that it folded, and thus was carried back to the fleet when they swapped space.
I choose to believe that Frontier style folding is just them improving the tech rather than a retcon, because how folding used to work is kind of a super major plot point of SDF. 'The island came with us' literally doesn't work with Frontier style folding.

It isn't better though. Delta stuff has the same ICS, with drone storage, EX-Gear cockpits, and probably internal fold technology as well as more (and better) weapons, assuming they continue using the MDEs and super dimensional guns of Frontier, along with more speed etc.
The only thing the Plus mechs have is brain control. Which was shown to have problems in the film. The Delta planes even have morphing wing geometry like the YF -21.
Hell, the VF-19 that Isamu uses in the second Frontier movie is retro-fitted to include some Frontier era tech if I recall.
The animation in Plus is better, but that's s budgetary thing, not the actual machines.
