Mankind only made it due to an incredibly lucky series of events involving the Zentradi having a reason not to just blow them away immediately (they wanted to capture the Macross and steal repair technology) which prompted them to eventually start listening in on communications for a tactical advantage.
That decision by Britai is what changed the course of history. If the Zentradi didn't start watching out TV, they wouldn't have been prompted to send in spies and set off the whole cultural snowball that won us the war.
We were the first place in the galaxy to get that lucky, which is why it seems like every other alien race we come across is stuck on one planet and is usually pretty chill. All of the more advanced races drew the attraction of a Zentradi fleet eventually and got annihilated in a matter of hours, and all of the properly warlike races that could have defended themselves against the Zentradi would have been erased by their Birdman to prevent them from being threats to the Galaxy.
Earth is currently top dog and exploding fast because we accidentally in between the lines. If the SDF-1 hadn't crashed on Earth, we probably wouldn't have ended up any different from the other Protoculture races, but that influx of alien tech unnaturally advanced our timetable.

Dynamite 7 is fantastic, as is some of the non-related episodes, particularly Fleet of the Strongest Women.
So far Delta seems to really be taking a lot of 7's material to heart, particularly the Jamming Birds idea later on in the series. 7 also, at least to me, gets better later on, especially after Basra stops Planet Dancing everywhere and when Max and Milia start playing larger roles.
