What's the most average /m/ show? We always hear about the best one and the worst one, but what's the one that's the most ok, 5/10, exactly 50% of shows are better and 50% of shows are worse, standard-issue benchmark average.

Out of all the stuff I watched, I'd probably give it to Dancouga Nova. The truest example is probably an old-school super robot show that forgot to get an interesting gimmick, though.

It's barely /m/ (a few mechas towards the end pop up out of nowhere), but Underwater Ray Romano is the one anime where I genuinely struggle to come up with any good or bad things to say about it. I only recently remembered it existed thanks to it randomly getting a sequel after how many years....?

Man, I'm standing by it. I literally can not think of one area where Daiku Maryu deviated from formula, exceeded expectations, or fell short of expectations. The only thing that I can really say about that show is, "It is a super robot show." It plays every single trope and cliche perfectly straight with adequate but not spectacular results. It's the most 5/10 thing I can think of.
Some people have posted stuff that I disagree with, too, but it's hard to get too mad under the circumstances. Like I don't think it's fair to get more than 50% mad, since that's the maximum amount that I can disagree by under the circumstances.

I disagree. Gunbuster has a slow build-up, but it has consistently good writing and animation. It does have a pretty dramatic shift in tone in the last two episodes though.

That is true, it did have some unique concepts and great mech design, but I think we are going by different metrics here. I think it's a 5/10 anime, but a unique 5/10 anime in that it is not good, but not bad either, it falls squarely in the middle. You seem to be going off of the fact that it is unique and deviates from the average.

I really don't think Eureka Seven is that good though. It has atmosphere, some great opening themes, a cool setting, and I really liked Dom and Anemone.. but that's about it. That's probably why I don't have a massive hateboner for the movie and manga the way the rest of /m/ does. The original series seems pretty overrated to me and I didn't really care as much about the changes. Haven't seen AO, no desire to.
While we're at it, I felt almost the exact same thing about King Gainer. Neat premise, neat setting, some cool characters, cool mech designs, nice atmosphere, spectacular OP, but the story itself left me disappointed, and I weigh that more heavily than anything else.
They're both 5/10 okay shows to me.

That show seemed kind of silly especially given that it came out after Rah-Xephon which was essentially a remake of the same thing with the post-eva style pschological pseudo-religious narrative. Reideen was, from the little I've seen, exactly the same but, unlike Rah-xephon, bland and uninteresting.

I'm sad /m/. It's literally the perfect mix of fan service, bland characters, overused tropes, action and only a pinch of CGI to create one of the comfiest, easiest mecha to watch. Also, that OP is pretty nice

REIDEEN tried to be a lot of things. It had big, weighty mecha that moved like big weighty mecha, it had a really cool side character who was both BEST GIRL and also a maybe-sort-of-Newtype, Reideen itself had a good mystique value to it on top of looking flat out alien (it's an interesting design, though very non simple unlike the original), most of the weapons were pretty cool and some of them worked entirely differently than in the original show - LOOKING AT YOU GOD VOICE - and a rival with an interesting backstory in an evil knockoff Reideen, which is neat, and in general it had some interesting bits to it. Plus there's that pachinko with Reideen and Raideen that has Double God Arrow, which is fucking amazing and needs to get in SRW someday.
But it's very easy to see that absolutely none of the writers fucking cared about anything, because it just never comes together and a lot of the cool things are totally underused, especially Roxel's whole bit. Plus there's an episode that is so absolutely filler it hurts near the ending that gets in the way of the actual plot going on at the time, which also takes time away from the actual show ending, which was about one episode too short. So brilliant job there.
