Actually, we have no idea why romance as a concept developed. And acting like it's definitely X when you have no proof is kind of silly. Especially when romance didn't even exist in most relationships till this century. And only in the Western (and to a lesser extent, Eastern) world. Which it demonstrably does, since couples often have love/romance without kids, so someone could love an alien (or robot) they can't reproduce with because the emotions are more important than the biological imperative to reproduce. Basically, HG claims they have worldwide rights and is aggressive about protecting it. Aside from Macross II and Plus, DYRL was dubbed in Hong Kong and released as "Clash of the Bioroids". I went and a look for the sales of a niche title just out of curiosity and Duck Dynasty sold 715, 000 copies of the first volume of season 2 in the UK alone in 2013. On dvd only.
