This. With a dedicated manga that was willing to set up a deliberate timeframe and give actual interaction between characters outside of supports, Awakening could actually be pretty good.
I'm not sure I'd call Kamui a Kira though. At least they felt at least a LITTLE conflict about the various stupid decisions they made, and said stupid decisions hurt people they loved instead of just working out somehow.

The problem with Kira in Destiny and many other main characters (such as Ike in RD) is that writers want to show off how strong they are relative to the new guys in the sequel and end up going too far off into the wrong direction and end up making it so that even if they did lose, in the long run its not really a loss.

Far as series go Fafner Exodus, Kotetsushin Jeeg and Zeta Gundam are the first ones that come to mind. Even @3 actually pulled it off pretty well with most of the @2 cast showing up mostly as supports and mentors.
