I dunno, Atlas is ugly but...I find it interesting at the same time.
It's like some bizarre Federation Frankenstein experiment trying to create a hybrid of a Gundam and newly aquired Zeon-tech, and the blending process isn't sophisticated enough yet.
I guess I just think the idea is neat which..in some weird way makes me like the design.

I don't see the transition between the tech and this unit. its probably addressed in some form in the manga but i haven't read it up until this gundam yet.

It kind of hasn't so far. All you know is that it's a super experimental post-war suit Fleming is helping to test while at the same time helping the Spartan task force hunt down Zeon remnants.
Maybe they'll get more into it later, but the manga's still pretty good so far so I haven't thought much of it yet myself.
