You get the scene from the promo of Hayate standing on the deck arms out. Hayate says that he’ll join them but he’s bad with orders. Mirage comes out and notices that as Hayate is announcing that he’ll join, he’s touching her Valk and yells at him to get the hell away from her Valk. That’s where it ends.
>2-3 episode teaser for next ep has Hayate in a normal suit in a Valk spinning out of control.
>There’s a scene with the Knights of the Wind after they retreat. They’re unhappy. The reviewers don’t mention where this is in the episode. Their fighters are in gerwalk mode in the hanger, incidentally. The hangar looks video game-y, not UN Spacey style.

For like the thousandth time they are only superficially related, the frame and transformation system have nothing in common aside from a few design cues.

Ok. It's direct evolution of yf-24 rather than simple iteration.
Thing is, pretty much every main valk up unyil now in any different series brought something new to the table. 1 to 4, eleven was back to basics but with canards, 19 is obvious, M7 gave us VF17 and Frontier bludgeoned with Messiah. Then comes Chronos with it's maim gimmick of weapon pod added to basic 24 design. Not revolutionary really but imo best variant from Evolution line. But a variant. 31 looks like refited airframe of Chronos. It lacks impact. I don't really care about heritage but up until now every new valk just worked from pure aesthetics standpoint. This is boring. Messiah with Excalibur wings level of boring. And that's pretty much my only problem with it.

They're, what, twice the size of Sound Force?Sivil came to find him in the same back-and-forth that has went on after her introduction into the series. It's not like she had any role in misdirecting City 7 into the sun. She also turned up only after Gigil escaped and his fleet got BTFO'd. If she hadn't been attracted by the singing she'd still be mucking around on City 7 in Akiko's body.
It was Battle 7 that tracked his singing and came in on time to reconnect to City 7. Seeing as the enemies completely ignored him and made a beeline straight for City 7, I think it speaks on how helpful he was at that moment. Basara ending up helping to connect the power cables between the two ships in the end because there wasn't anyone left to sing to; even then you could say that his last-minute singing attracted Sivil's attention when she went out searching for him.
I mean, that's Basara for you, but if they DIDN'T want to portray him as an obsessed madman, they couldn't have made a worse scene for it.

The series looks like it should deliver a love triangle that will have people at each others throats, more ace-vs-ace VF dogfights than any other Macross and has a solid cast of characters and good songs. Way I see it, that makes it a very promising Macross entry.

The VF-171 is a standardized version of the original Special Ops VF-17 that the NUN used as their main fighter.
According to Shoji Kawamori, the VF-171 Nightmare Plus was chosen as the main variable fighter for the 2059 setting because the previously designated U.N. I find it funny in that aspect since the VF-17 is a clear homage to the F-117 Nighthawk, which is, design-wise, as iconic and as far away from the "mook" look as FS-wings are rare amongst aircraft designs. It doesn't look hero-ish, but it's as far from being mook-ish as any of the VFs were in 7 that weren't the Thunderbolt.
Seeing as the VF-0 first introduced different wings across variants (technically the VF-19 was first, but they only changed the size of the wing portion that was meant to be forward-swept), I wonder why he didn't just go full Eurofighter with the wings on the VF-19; or if he so wanted to make sure that they were mooks, VF-191 or something.

Tailless, tailed, cranked, cropped, compound, etc. Come to think of it, the -31A only really swaps the movable wingtips, so by technicality the other variants still retain delta-wing characteristics.
