The series's long past the point where he can do anything useful in a fight so it often just comes across as embarrasing to me (and aren't Frieza's minions supposed to be stronger?). Personally I think I enjoy his elder master role and peverted antics a lot more.

Toriyama condensed and reassigned power levels. All characters who are not his cat's OC can potentially fight each other without giving a fuck unless it's important, then they need goku and vegeta.

It was the first time he actually fought in MAX power mode. The RoF movie also showed him charging a Z-style aura during the battle. He was clearly meant to be stronger than before there, somehow.
