You can't start a story with "Once upon a time in our universe Boy A loved Girl B very much, now in a war-torn alternate universe world blah blah..." and if they adapt just Extra they might as well not adapt anything at all. Most people remember ML for UL/Alternative.
13 episodes a season might be a comfortable fit for Extra but it would barely fit in UL and certainly not Alternative. Problem is, strictly speaking from a financial standpoint, how much are they willing to pay to get it done? At this point in time in the 2016 Extra would be competing with the hundreds of other newer, even more moe-oriented SoL/romcom adaptations out there, and who's going to willingly gravitate towards endgame drama when you can watch more idols?
Most works are best in the medium they were born in; not because of the medium, but because, as the first iteration of said work, their presentation is planned to make full use of their chosen medium. All the adaptations of the trilogy hereafter have been Sumika/Meiya-centric. ML originating as a manga/novel series would be tangled and draggy as all hell if every one-half to two volumes the story had to reset itself for a different girl.

Then I realized that they didn't have orbit bombing at that point of the timeline yet, therefore no hellfire from the skies at all because the HSST bombing fleet isn't even in existence yet. Looking back, there are a lot of strategies in the period of the original trilogy that are taken for granted.
I'm liking it, though. They might have (subjectively, depending on who you speak with) destroyed the characterizations of the cast, but the anti-BETA warfare is pretty much spot-on. To see it in the original trilogy is one thing, but to see it again animated on how it was like early on in the timeline whenthe Heavy Lasers took waves of 120mm HESH/APCBCHE without giving a fuckis really something else.

I mean they kind of have a point since fatass 1G TSFs from the 70s/80s would be much less survivable for deep-striking into the lasers' faces compared to the TSFs they had a couple of decades later.
In my mind that kind of raises the question though of what exactly those TSFs are good for. It seems like if you're planning to stay far, far away lasers anyway, why bother with a design the strength of which is being able to evade lasers and get right up in the BETAs' faces?
