They still really, really push the limit of being way too "realistic." They're quite detailed to the point that I still think he just lineart'd real bugs and shopped them in and colored them.
Looking at Wicked Apple's Daisy Chain series, extreme detail can still be done without the bugs looking like photos shoved into the manga.
