***READ THE GUIDE***
For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

The Grazes are fun to build. Their gimmick is an inner frame they share across all the variants, and the armor pieces go over that. It makes it easy to build, make a custom of, and paint.
Finished my Graze custom. Paint on the frame scraped a little in a couple of small spots while putting the armor on but should be an easy touch up.
Didn't do much to customize it. Mostly just stuck the ezsr boosters on it and modded the rifle a little.

They are super easy to attach. Just take the original backpack, clip the pegs on the moving part back a few millimeters, and then fit a peg into the hole from it.

The last half of the series has just been nonstop Gundam and Graze releases. I keep saying this but I really wish Bandai had pushed the whole HG inner frame gimmick they had a lot more. Only the Grazes and Gundams got inner frames, the rest are standard HG designs.
Like it would have been cool if Hyakuren and Hyakuri shared the same inner frame (they had similar designs anyway). Get rid of Amida's custom (or at least make it more different than a paint job), and you open up a slot for a Rouei HG. Finally a Rodi frame and a Spinner Rodi HG would complete it.
There, five (six counting the upcoming MS G) inner frames for all the HG gunpla in IBO. It could have been something cool and unique, but you could say that for IBO in general.

It comes down to keeping costs down. Graze and the gundams have a good amount of exposed frame plus the frame being the gundams gimmick. Stuff like the Rodi and Turbine MS don't have as much and are slightly bulkier on top of that (especially in the torso). Any frame in the torao area would be pointless and covered up anyways.

So I got pic related as a gift, put it together and found out it needs A LOT of painting to match how it's supposed to look.
I've never painted a kit before, so am I better off just painting the parts that need to be different colors, or painting the whole thing? How would you recommend to paint it?

What do you guys think about painting a kit mostly in silver or other metallic colors, joints included? I'm thinking about doing it with the upcoming Zaku I Origin or some other monoeye kit. I'm aiming for a dull-not too shiny- metal look kinda like a Terminator endoskeleton.

You can do whatever you want. Painting after building is recommended. I don't know about others but I hold no sentimental value to things I'm not proud of so when I get around to painting myself, that's the route I'm gonna take.
As for customs, I think most people just lack imagination. I know I do. The extent of mine is palate swaps.

1. Yes, it's called "pre-building". Don't snap the pieces too tight together so you don't break anything when you take them apart to paint.

As far as cheap practice kits go, grab a cheap HG like a Hi-Mock or a GM. They're simple to build, great for testing, and both around $10.

Since the question wasn't actually answered... Citadel's new range is all kinds of weird since they removed some mainstay colours and others don't match with what they're supposed to. The second blue, for example, would have been Midnight Blue, which no longer exists. Likewise their only medium grey now is The Fang, which has a blue tint to it. Either way, going first column - second column, you've got Altdorf Guard Blue, Midnight Blue (dc), Stormvermin Fur (I guess...), Ulthien Grey, Mechanicus Grey/The Fang (YMMV), Yriel Yellow, Warpstone Glow.

Also I cannot recommend enough that you change to Vallejo paints. You'll save a boatload of money down the line as you can thin them more without losing coverage due to their higher pigmentation and better quality carrier medium. Not to mention you have a much wider scope of colours.

Metallic surfaces are very divisive as they often lack a lot of depth, unless you're really canny with your shading. They can be a bitch to panel line what with all the reflected light. Personally I hate largely metallic suits, the Unicorn Phenix makes me retch.

Be warned, dark plastic is much more susceptible to stress marks from nubs and sanding. I don't recommend leaping into a dark-coloured MG until you're sure you won't cock it up, as it's a pain in the arse to fix without paitning. That said, absolutely buy an MG or RG next. HGs are nice for practice and completing a range, but they just don't compare at all to the better grades.

Kimaris Trooper review pics coming out. At first, I thought it was fucking stupid but honestly I like the look as a slimmed down Kimaris. The side skirts being additional "arms" looks like it'll be useful for kitbashing, and the head sculpt doesn't look as terrible as I thought.
