I want a game about them as well, the Galactic Federation is cool, but the fact it's not a single player game from their perspective or even a sidescrolling game where you salvage stuff as you go along disappoints me greatly. It truly looks terrible, from the slow movement that the Prime games didn't have to that extent, the monster wrangling, the space pirates that look like they're just slashing a mile away from you without really hitting anything, and enemies that die so quick they don't seem like a threat at all.
It's just a real disappointment when we could easily have a sidescrolling game since it's on the 3DS anyway.

The manga explained it. They are a peace keeping force. Aside from the Space Pirates, the GF are responsible for making sure planets don't try to suddenly seceded from the Federation. They also pretty much said that the GF is so hopelessly corrupt that it pretty much is more of a threat then the Space Pirates ever were. They are pretty much just one tick away from pulling a Star Wars and becoming the Empire.

Keep in mind that people are absolutely starved for a sidescroller Metroid, the classic formula. The last one was Zero Mission nearly 12 years ago unless you really want to count Other M which was something like 6 years ago? It left a horrible taste in people's mouths and it's understandable they'd want a proper game.
I don't care at all about the Samus vs Federation Soldiers debate, it's pointless and who you play as really doesn't matter in the end, but it's easy to understand why people are so angry. Another thing to consider is that no one would be as pissed if they just got a normal Metroid game, or even a proper Prime game if it came down to it and this game on the side as a side game. Instead this is being touted as a proper, mainline kind of game.

I think they thought it'd catch on through word of mouth, perhaps do whatever it is that made Metal Wolf Chaos become a rather well-known name despite never seeing a release outside of Japan.
Contrast with Splatoon, which was all in your face with some memorably corny jingles every 15 seconds on every other channel.

Now, I get people like F-Zero fans suffer waiting for their next game, but 6 years is a hell of a long time to wait for a series that is pretty well known. Couple this with the last game being Other M, and the anger is simple. People just want a proper Metroid game, I don't even think it matters if it's a side-scroller or a Prime game, as long as it's a proper one and you can explore with enjoyable gameplay. From what we've seen this game isn't exactly that appealing and looks to be a Triforce Heroes take on Metroid.

You know what came out only a year prior to that? Echoes. Then one year after Pinball we got Hunters and then a year after that we got Corruption, two main games on top of a side game that equaled the main game(Which we also had a demo/PoC for and were waiting for). No one would have a problem with a side-game coming out as long as they had a main game to also play, but they're touting this game as the main one while all the footage they show looks extremely disappointing even compared to something like Hunters.
There's some overreaction and saying it's absolute garbage, sure, but to not understand it makes no sense, people want a mainline Metroid game with the classic exploration. Instead you get a Prime knockoff that looks much slower, huge focus on co-op, and very linear. Keep in mind that people thought this was an eShop $10-15 game.
