The idea is you'd have some familiarity with how successful a lot of those shows were.
Mai-HiME managed barely over 10k average disk sales and Otome did less. Horizon alone did over 20k and it can't get a third season because Love Live averages over 50k over the same number of episodes. Mai-HiME is what established Studio 8's reputation but they've basically outgrown it.

Xenoglossia and Sora Kake Girl are in the same sequence of anime originals although they're reasonably different in their own ways.
Xenoglossia in particular has a lot of IBO's weird pacing and direction and retarded fighting because they're both Nagai, even though the overall story structure isn't too dissimilar to both Mai-series.

They pretty much ran the original popular characters out of anything else to do and don't have the confidence that the brand will still work if they use new ones.
Otome gave it's new leads more of a chance than say, Seed Destiny did, but it still had to resort to using Mai Shiziru and Natsuki again in major roles.
