You guys have no sticky so sorry if this kind of post is frowned upon, but I'd really like to get into mechas and stuff.
What's a good starting point?
Mecha Looking at its Own Shadow
Go look at webms in the webm threads. If you see something cool and is interested, then watch the show.
Do yourself a favor and stay away from Gundam
>>13877254
I don't really recommend this. There's a lot of spoilers in many webbums there
>>13877254
I was somewhat afraid of what >>13877267 confirmed. Also thanks, >>13877267
>>13877264
Why?
>>13877273
>Why?
It's really dumb, but takes itself seriously
>>13877240
Gundam 0079 or 8th MS if you don't mind slightly older animation, maybe Thunderbolt, it's pretty self contained, got an entertaining story, pretty stylish
>>13877279
I have nothing against that, but any suggestions instead?
>>13877282
I love older animation. I'll check those out. Thanks anon.
>>13877297
Dougram, Casshan, VOTOMS, Tetsuwan Birdy, Cutey Honey, Space Adventure Cobra, and basically any 80s ova
>>13877307
I'll check those out too. Thanks anon.
I have only one litmus test:
Gasaraki. Your opinion of it will determine your fate from here on out.
>>13877250
>MLAIOS
>Not starting with Boots Warrior FOOTCLAMP
get a load of this faggot
Tell us what kinda stories/sci-fi you like OP. It'll help a lot.
>>13877240
Check out Gundam F91. It's a standalone movie that has the same pretext as most other series in the franchise, except the story has been compressed into a 2-hour runtime. It's from 1991 when anime what hit its stride in animation quality so you don't have to wade through a lot of the stuff from the '80s that just look very dated to younger audiences who quickly get bored when the visuals are lacking.
>>13877323
>starting with entry level shit
>>13877345
>>13877315
I'll check those out. Thanks anons!
>>13877339
I'm not strong fan of anything sci-fi related, honestly.
>>13877339
This.
>>13877240
Getter Robo manga. The best comic with giant robots in it, and one of the best mecha period.
>>13877367
>>comes to /m/ a board that is 90% sci-fi related content and wants to get into the board's content
>>not a strong fan of sci-fi related content
Ok, whatever. I can give you The Vision of Escaflowne. It is about fantasy robutts.
>>13877383
>> instead of >
Why? And calling most /m/ related stuff sci-fi related is rather pushing it.
>>13877408
Not in the fucking least. A quick survey of the board shows the vast vast majority of threads are about sci-fi shows. Not much of it is hard sci-fi, but it is very firmly in the realm of sci-fi. Even borderline stuff like some of the magical girl shit that gets posted here gets a high-tech coating.
Diebuster
moe space robots. obviously the best /m/ show ever besides eva
Gunbuster- not as good as diebuster because it's so old but it's still OK. I like the parts with boobs
Patlabor-
a really boring series of TV shows and movies where nothing happens, will make you feel like a grownup
Iczer one
for depth, sophisticated and layered plot, character development, etc
Gundam Wing
the first entry in the beloved Gundam franchise
All Purpose Cultural Catgirl OVA
the most anime anime that ever animed
>>13877459
Careful, you might trigger that one anon
>>13877367
The first part still applies though friend. How do you feel about episodic series? Do you prefer more serious or lighthearted stuff? We need more to go on if you want good recs.
Pic somewhat related.
>>13877459
There's also Project A-KO, the 80's equivalent to Nuku Nuku.
>>13877488
oh yeah, that one's so fun
>>13877488
Blu-Ray when?
>>13877383
That looks pretty cool.
What I meant is that most of the sci-fi stuff I enjoy is probably not relatable to mecha stuff. I guess.
>>13877451
>>13877459
Thanks guys.
>>13877487
Thanks for the picture. I think some self-contained series with few episodes would be great for experiencing a greater variety of shows, but if getting into a long, long series is worth it, I'd be fine with that too.
>>13877240
All manga:
Giant Robo
Kikaider
Cyborg 009
Mars
Robot Keiji
Mazinger Z
Getter Robo Saga
Thanks everyone for the great suggestions!
I have enough suggestions to not be bored ever again
>>13877557
Will see if I find these in paper. I hate reading from a screen.
>>13877652
>hate reading from a screen
Might want to consider getting over that, since most all of the best /m/anga is only available scanlated, and the only /m/ materials worth any time is manga and novels, so.
>>13877676
I'm honestly not really into manga and anime so I don't have a lot of knowledge on the subject.
I recently watched Evangelion because I promised to watch it the day moot left. To see what the fuss was all about and who is best girl.
I enjoyed most of it, but the huge robots doing huge robot stuff part was surprisingly enjoyable. Which is why I'm here today.
I'll see if I can handle it. Thanks anon.
>>13877696
If you do feel like giving it a shot, you can download them from here:
http://getterrobo.blogspot.ca/
http://happyscans.blogspot.ca/
https://www.mediafire.com/folder/9cbzthfsnd309/Cyborg_009
You'll also need a reader of some sort, like MangaMeeya or Honeyview.
>>13877727
Thanks anon, that's great. Everyone here's been extra nice to me.
>>13877297
Don't listen to his lies, check out the Gundam Guide.
>>13877240
Giant Robo. It's pretty great, beautiful animation and a really cool setting
>>13877380
This. Also the OVAs
>>13877451
>Gunbuster- not as good as diebuster because it's so old but it's still OK. I like the parts with boobs
this is bait, right?
>>13877696
Rebuilds are pretty good when the EVA units involved, but 3.33 is a huge deviation.
Also my own reccs:
>Zambot 3: An ACTUAL deconstruction
>Gurran Laggen: Like Eva, make your own opinions, lot nicer if you understand the trends and notable moments in Mecha
>Big O: Noir like series, focuses on slower battles
Also, be wary of people who say to avoid certain shows. Trolls like to resort to badmouthing things, mostly Gundam because of issues.
>>13877367
>I'm not strong fan of anything sci-fi related
Then watch Shin Mazinger and Giant Robo
Platinum stuff.
>>13877240
0079, SDF Macross, AT VOTOMS, Xabungle, Ideon, Dougram, Layzner, Vifam, Lgaim, Dragonar for the classics
Big O is a good newer show
For OVAs, you have to see Dragon's Heaven and the Gunbuster series
>>13882274
I forgot:
Galient and Dunbine (fantasy themed)
