How exactly do you reload them if you're running out of ammunition?
You fly back to grab another gunpod?
Protoculture.

no seriously, that's every answer you need in macross

Utilizing the space within the barrels' cowling, numerous rounds are loaded. Initially, magazines could not be switched out; subsequently types that allowed for replacing of were developed.
So, you probably don't reload VF-1 gunpods at all. Just fly back to grab a new one and leave the empty one behind so that the on-site technicians can plug a feeder belt into it to restock their pile of grab-n-go gunpods.
>>13845073
>putting ammo around the barrel
And it's a gatling on top of that.
I don't even.
>>13845245
But that's a normal looking gun surrounded by normal looking ammo. They are not even telescoped.
>>13845195
military explosives are incredibly stable.
You can throw C4 into a fire and it won't explode.
>>13845306
Explosives. Not stuff used in shells. Go take a look at tank cook off videos. Or overheated M60's firing by themselves.

Why are people illiterate
>>13845195
>Design something to look cool without caring how it works.
>Nerds demand to know how it works, ask where the ammo is stored.
>Slap together some bullshit, end up with this.
Basically every science fiction design falls prey to this if you try to look at how it functions, and the ones that don't are just modern-day tech with some minor aesthetic changes.
>>13846165
Any MG will do a runaway if they overheat if it's not open bolt. A fucking ma deuce will do that.
>>13845073
Given the rate of fire of these gunpods, how do they not run out of ammo in 20 seconds?
>>13845073
This is really, really stupid. You see Valkyries ejecting magazines and putting in new ones all the time in Macross. This bullshit is just dumb.
>>13846371
They do
But 20 seconds is enough to kill plenty of enemies
>>13846369
Gunpods dont overheat because they are made with overtechnology
>>13846375
Not in SDF and DYRL, they just went BRRRRRRT until they could brrt no more. Magazines came in around Plus.
>>13845073
It's only the VF-1 that seems to have this problem.
>>13845195
Actual gunpods worked like that

>>13846605
He probably only watched that scene in Plus where Isamu reload his YF-19 gunpod and thought it's the same all the time in other Macross.
Or like you said, just stupid.

The GPU-5/A did
海外の日本語でこんな言葉が有る
スタッフのヤル気(殺気、犯気)
One could argue that:
a. Most of the time, the Valk's moving fast enough that aircooling is sufficient.
b. Heckuva stable propellant (like what Dynamit Nobel used for the G-11's caseless ammunition) plus the cartridge cases acting as heat sinks.
c. It's a gatling. More barrels & chambers to distribute the heat generated per round of ammo fired, and there might not even be enough ammo for heat buildup & cook-off problems to raise its head.
d. Thermostat to warn the pilot.
>>13847564
And yeah, the VF-1's gunpod is basically a bigger GPU-5 with a pistol grip.

Only around the base where barrels are the thickest and there is significant space between ammo and barrels.
VF gunpods are much thinner and longer.

a. Alien cooling technology

They tap the trigger.
When a short tap fires like 20 bullets, it's more than enough to kill a lot of things if you make good use of it.
>>13846371
20 seconds? that's a long ass time to hold down a trigger.
Are the VF 25's gunpods fed by a detachable magazine or do they have to be refilled back at base?
From what I understand
Detachable Magazines:
SV51
VF11
VF17
YF/VF 19
VF 171? (gunpod looks similar to the VF17, doesn't get collapsed or stowed the same way).
VF25 G
Refill at base
VF0
VF1
YF21/VF22
>>13848375
Right, but the rate of fire isn't going to be 20/60. It's going to be something like 480/60. I'm just thinking that the ammo capacity in OP's image is really small, even assuming they shepherd their ammunition.
>>13847510
Have an actual schematic of that gunpod, complete with ammunition coiling around the gun.
>>13850423
>that pic

>>13846165
>The M60 is a pretty shit gun though.
I'm sure you've fired one.
>>13850506
Having a limiter on the gun that reduces the rate of fire into more a more practical rate of fire would solve the problem.
>>13846647
Yeah, the YF-19 had a detachable magazine. Only two spare mags, though.
>>13847617
Great, now I'm going to spend all night trying to figure out how to not only deal with the excess heat but to benefit from it.
Sure, just pump some cold gas through the barrels and vent it backwards to counter the recoil. It's not like the thermal shock will turn the entire thing into a ticking time bomb.
fuck my life.
>>13852612
Two words: alien technology
There, have some sleep
>>13852939
THAT DOESN'T EXPLAIN ANYTHING
It just means I have to figure out a method nobody on earth has figured out yet. Like using magnets to pull entropy out of individual molecules. Which makes more sense when you remember that heat is basically just molecules rattling around.
>>13853491
Simple answer: The rate of fire we have is actually the maximum possible. In real conditions they reduce the rate of fire because of ammunition, heat and the fact that such a high rate of fire is impractical.
>>13853491
>I have to figure out a method nobody on earth has figured out yet
Wait until a protoculture ship crash into earth, then maybe you can reverse engineer something out of it. Like an alloy that can keep cool forever to be used as gun barrel.
