Damn near all 80s OVA were trash. None-the-less, several were excellent in addition to being trash, Iczer-1 among them.

Speaking seriously though, something about it made me like this OVA from the moment I got into anime 10 years ago. I think it is similar to Kawaijiri stuff in that it has the right mix of looks, fantasy, fanservice and thrills - despite having objective flaws.
It was fun trash.
Iczer-3 is honestly a lot better in my opinion, though. At least I think I actually knew what the hell was happening when I was watching it.
