Between Fraw Bau, Sochie Heim and Noredo Nug I get the feeling Tomino doesn't like the childhood friend thing. Even Fa was supposed to lose originally with Kamille leaving her behind to find Four or something if I recall.
I wonder if it's something about their attitude, like the fact they wait patiently for the main character without making a move of any kind to pursue their own feelings or if it's because of a bad experience or what?

I think it is to show that the MC grows quite a lot. Not that Fraws don't grow and change but usually not to the same extent and a less drastic change. Also likely because as we go through life we do leave people behind, childhood romances are just that. Plus with Greco the whole theme was leaving behind ideas of the past and the cheerleading girls were looking for a man to marry cause it was tradition

Sochie was the only one who really embodied the idea that childhood romances were just that to me though to be honest, because she started the show by failing to complete her coming of age ceremony, acted like a spoiled child a lot of the time in the show (in a good way mind, since it made for a good character arc) and then finished the show throwing away a symbol of childhood. I suppose I can see how Noredo might have been meant to be the same thing given the tradition you mentioned, but she just didn't have enough agency in it to actually notice or care I guess.
Also, Steer is a sexy as fuck and I love her English, but Masher or Mick were better in my opinion, since they did a wider range of stuff. I'm happy to post another Steer all the same though.

I don't think a character needs agency to be good. Banana-rama and Mick both had more effects on the story (though mostly just turning up to fight) but aren't very interesting characters despite being fun. Nooredo doesn't have a big arc what she does get are very good moments for encapsulating the shows ideas
Noredo are similar in a few ways (Sochie getting more time helps to flesh her out a lot), even end the show the same way which there is a picture of Noredo reenacting the throwing bit but i lost

I really liked the whole Megafauna crew. They didn't do a lot but were all given little moments which is better than half arsed development. Too many shows try to make every character relevant and have a "deep" backstory but it ends up wasted

Friendly reminder that Sochie is technically not a childhood friend, and that Cecily Fairchild and Sara from King Gainer both win their respective bowls.
I think who wins is always a matter if what feels natural/earned by the end. It always hurts the childhood friend that they don't start out in love yet, and if nothing during the course of the plot changes between the characters, then they haven't exactly earned the right to win their respective bowls.
Fraw never put in work to move beyond being the henpecking friend. Noredo, I felt, tried her best but never had the right timing or courage to make a move or be honest/direct with Bellri to make him see her as a woman/distract him from his sister complex. Sochie (fitting the archetype but kinda missing the strict definition) spent too much time directly antagonizing Loran by not being open minded or trying to make him jealous versus actually doing things that would endear herself to him. And Elle in ZZ just kinda doesn't stand a chance since Judau has a one track mind on his sister, has the most godly harem to compete against, plus she kind of shoots herself in the foot by also having a thing for Beecha - which Judau is aware of and disqualifies her in his eyes.
Meanwhile, Fa toughs out a bunch of hardships and even takes up piloting just to continue being near Kamille, and wins a battle of attrition for his affections. And Cecily reciprocates Seabrook's feelings and unchains herself from her family/destiny to be with Seabrook.
The only time the romantic outcome we get doesn't feel like a natural consequence of the plot is Amuro's changing romantic trysts between his appearances. Why he breaks up with Sayla and Beltorchika, and then proceeds to hook up with other girls that are essentially standins for the previous ones, is kinda baffling.

I have a feeling that Amuro is having issues in dealing with women because he didn't grow up with his mom. Remember that he left for the colonies at a very young age, and he only managed to reunite with his mother in Canada(?) because the White Base had to pass through there. And that particular episode showed hints of a strain in their relationship after being apart for so long. Amuro might be looking for a substitute to that motherly affection, or is adversely affected by being both a shut-in, and having no motherly care in his formative years.

True, but she did spend two+ years pining for Loran as they grew up and became adults, so I think she qualifies personally.

Correct me if I'm wrong (I haven't seen the show in years), but from what I recall Gainer was the one with an explicit crush on her and her feelings were rather ambivalent until he announced his attraction publicly. Gainer was the childhood crusher in that relationship from what I recall, not Sara.
That said, I do agree with your point in general. As the director Tomino has the ability to direct the outcome of what feels natural or doesn't though and it almost always ends up with the childhood friend on the losing end of things. I'm not adverse to it, I'm just curious if there's a reason on his end for it.

Production drama essentially. Sayla's VA wasn't available during Zeta and when it came time for Char's Counterattack Bandai didn't want Amuro in a serious relationship with a pregnant woman the way Tomino did so Amuro got a new relationship instead or something if I recall.

He has such a huge experience that messes up his head and then gets locked away in his house. His relationships were always more he liked having a person around but he was never really close them and you could tell he was not an open person. Which is partly because they can't connect to him in that same way Lalah did. He didn't love Lalah but he is unable to be that close to someone again and the thought of being so scares him a lot in Zeta.

I can't think of a single anime where someone has grabbed another character's ass and it lead to flirtation of any kind. Not unless you count screaming like they've just been raped about how the other person is a pervert as flirtation anyways. Never mind that Bellri didn't grab her ass, but instead just happened to touch it while helping her up and that Noredo was pretty obviously aware of this.
Next time you're attracted to someone pay attention to how much you touch them, both by accident and by design - because touch is a huge part of flirtation. And taking advantage of an accidental touch like that doesn't make you some kind of weirdo or outlier, it just makes you normal.
