Orguss has them. Orguss and Nikick have modes that make them that style, and the Ishkick is always one. That's tangentially related to Macross, though, since it's another Super Dimension series.

It's possible to build them in Armored Core, but, again, that's the same mechanical designer as Macross.

There was a PS2 Strategy RPG called Ring of Red that had walking tank-style mechs. Phantom Crash on the X-Box and its sequel Steel Lancer Arena International, too. Chromehounds and Steel Batallion are Japanese, too, and they have walking-tank style mechs.

Much, much better quality in models (for starters, the pre-painted models are actually painted), and the lore wasn't just softcore porn.
Still dead, though.
Mech and faction designs are fairly generic (with the possible exception of the albino zen gorillas with the 1950's car theme), but usually solid.

In all of the times that I've posted this image, you're the first person to notice that before noticing Dingdong Dantes and Bong Revilla.

This is a real movie, I swear.
>>
>>13630882
It was the second thing I noticed. The first thing was how goofy that thing to the left looks. Are those fleshy Mickey Mouse gloves or something?
>>
>>13630887

I think those are just his hands. It's been a while since I've watched this movie, so I might just be forgetting stuff, but I don't think they ever explain where these giant alien guys come from or what they are. They're just there at the end so that the robots have something to punch. The rest of the movie is spent fighting remarkably human, conveniently budget-saving aliens.

It's the Phillipines, man. Budget is not a thing that they do.

Even if the budget had been gigantic and the CGI masterfully done, nothing can save a design that stupid.
The other mech is okay. Very generic, but okay. At least the cockpit has metal bars over it to protect the pilot, unlike most Hollywood mechs.

Oops, forgot this was a Western thread.

Anyway, Star Wars had plenty of walkers, but did the EU ever have straight up mechs? It'd be tacky (well, this is Star Wars) but I'd love to see some kind of Jedi mech suit with an enhanced lightsaber beam sword weapon capable of shredding enemy vehicles and ships in one blow. Basically a Jedi Gundam blasting through space tearing shit up.
>>
>>13630579

You mean besides the entire CIS droid army? Otherwise much of the EU is made up of humanoid mechs like the SD-9s and 10s, or the Dark trooper project. As for mech suits not so much.
>>
What I am taking away from this thread is that in East vs West conflict the West would have a combined arms approach using power armor and bulky walker mecha, with a few Kaiju scale flagship super robots that look equally bulky and have enormous payloads of ordinance. East would be all Gundam scale super reals with their own flagship Kailua scale supers and a handful of advanced flying battleships to be their mobile base.

Canada would be Scopedog knock offs, only cheaper, even more out of date, achieve phenomenal battlefield success in spite of it, and rack up a terrifying kill count.

Is this for serious? 2008 wasn't that long ago.

>>13631860

I can kind of see it. It's got some of that overdesigned, random-details-everywhere look that defines Bayformers. It doesn't really look like anything, it's just a pile of details that moves. Robocop 2 isn't as bad a Bayformers, but I can see the comparison.

What's the name of that old Canadian FPS that tried so hard to be anime that it even had slightly edited Evangelion posters in-game, and the robots you could pilot were very clearly just slightly altered Gundams and stuff?

I wish people would stop forcing heavy gear. Dead game, dead franchise. And thankfully so, since it was garbage in every way.

Can't find any pics of them on google, but the old 80's comic Scout was set in a dystopian future (aka the 1990's) where the USA had turned into a third world country, and both the Russians and Israel had giant mecha (of the humanoid kind). I don't think we ever saw them fight, though, they were just there to look cool and show how much more advanced those countries were.

They take the whole "huge torso and arms, tiny waist" thing too far, in my opinion. Both because it looks pretty goofy, and because the models are notoriously annoying to assemble, at least back when it was all metal. They're prone to tipping over and falling apart.
Also Privateer Press hate it when people call their steampunk game steampunk, for some reason. It's "fullmetal fantasy", apparently.

Some of the mercenaries are cool though.

Ah, the point about the models is well-taken. I hadn't tried to assemble one, but I imagine it's extremely annoying to put them together if they're not stable. I've never seen another RTS try to do the 'spanning all history' thing since.

That say, there will probably be a nickname for technology of our current era , or the 70s/80s
http://www.bouletcorp.com/2011/07/07/formicapunk/

btw, how would you call our era-punk and what would define it ?
To me it's the Internet and our fascination for tablet everything-connected
Artist from the future will make up story where the Internet is like another world/beast literally overflowing in our world, everybody trying to control it.
Power-level would be based on tablet quality, able to control everything, computer, car. With awesome spy-camera and super-micro, able to dethrone politic and dictator through memetic

You're the guy that makes Dieselpunks pop a blood vessel eh?

Our era punk?.... So like hipsterpunk or something..? Bad coffee, ironic spellcraft, and stupid fake glasses
>>
>>13633942
I think the issue a lot of people have with 'x-punk' is that the original 'cyberpunk' term, specifically the 'punk' part of it, carries a lot of ideological connotations not necessary present in everything we apply the 'punk' label too. William Gibson's original cyberpunk novels were laden with distrust of authority, especially that of large, multinational corporations, and cast a jaundiced eye on the effects technological progress had on the quality of human life. That's why they were 'punk' stories, because the protagonists were 'punks' whose defiance of corporate authority was portrayed as heroic or at least sympathetic (heroism being in short supply in a cyberpunk world). A lot of stuff labeled "steampunk," however (such as Girl Genius) doesn't really have the criticism of industrialization or Victorian society that would merit the 'punk' moniker. The writer for Girl Genius, Kaja Foglio (her husband Phil does the art) made this point in an LJ entry:

http://kajafoglio.livejournal.com/60562.html

> I've never liked the term Steampunk much for our work, it's derived from Cyberpunk (a term which I think actually fits its genre well) but we have no punk, and we have more than just steam, and using a different name seemed appropriate.
>>
>>13633942
>btw, how would you call our era-punk and what would define it ?
Sadly there is a name for it, I'm afraid.
"Grunge-punk."
>>
>>13634019 #

Yeah that's a good point, quite a good number of steampunks have very little "Punk" in them... Unless they're some flavor of Pirate(and sometimes they're not as slung together as they could be)

>>13634021

That sounds like the 90's more than now to me.
>>
>>13633942
Our era?

Cyberpunk.

I shit you not.

Gibson was right.
>>
>>13634062

Agreed, all that's missing is proper augs and its classical cyberpunk
>>
>>13634185
I think we're a bit of a ways from classic cyberpunk yet. While we've got the Internet down pat, we haven't quite got the merging of man and machine seen in cyberpunk media like Gibson's novels (or Ghost in the Shell). In those settings, stuff like artificial arms are readily available (though the better stuff is very expensive, of course) and people can hook into the net directly with their brains. Right now prosthetics are still expensive and underpowered (though improving rapidly) and neuroscientists still haven't figured out how graft stuff onto the brain physically, though they've also made strides on that front. In a few years, though, I think we really will be living in a world worthy of Gibson's novels.

Sorry, I don't know what you refer to.
> Dieselpunk
But I'm wondering if we are going wrong on this.
Maybe Steam, Cyber-, Diesel-, Gasolepunk (Madmax), are centered more around the technologies expectation, with the Era as a byproduct.

You can have Cyberpunk as soon as there is a network, or steampunk even in the future. As long as the point of view come from someone in the past overly focusing on what he know.

Like "Rocketpunk" (google that and "Atomic Rocket"). Apollo Era + Space Race + Nuclear Race = A future where Nuclear-spaceship carry American or Communist to the NEW FRONTIER !

>>13634019
>A lot of stuff labeled "steampunk," however (such as Girl Genius) doesn't really have the criticism of industrialization or Victorian society that would merit the 'punk' moniker.
I find your arguments interesting, but Girl Genius make a very big deal of technology being Self-Empowering but also factor for massive political enslavement, that's really punk
If it doesn't fit as much as it could it's only because it shift easily toward Alchemy and Fantasy with power-source not very steam-like

>>13634212

>>
>>13634212
I think smart devices have become pseudo-organs for the modern civilized being. We're so tethered to them they might as well be a part of the human physiology, even if they're not yet part of the actual anatomy.

In a way it's better this way, cyberbrains by virtue of design have nightmarish security risks to contend with. Smartphones have security by way of isolation.
>>
We're totally cyberpunk. We don't have much for implants, but one time I'm at work at media outlet...

Media Outlet had billboards along the major highway that we could update for breaking news events.
Bad Guy is on the run from the cops, headed up the major highway.
I flip the switch to make our billboards live, and update them about COPS AFTER BAD GUY ON THE RUN IN BLACK SEDAN HEADED UP THE ROAD TUNE IN NOW OR YOU MIGHT DIE or whatever.
So then we watch from the live chopper feed how he's on the run driving past the lightup signs reading about how he's a wanted fugitive just like in all the cyberpunk stories.
>>
>>13634300
>If it doesn't fit as much as it could it's only because it shift easily toward Alchemy and Fantasy with power-source not very steam-like

Yeah, that's what Kaja Foglio said ("we have more than steam").

>>13634320
Oh, now that's a really interesting way of thinking about it. Not even Gibson foresaw the rise of smartphones and other such devices. And yeah, as SaC pointed out, cyberbrains have terrible security risks, though IMO it's very likely we'll see some form of them eventually. Maybe not with networking features for the reasons you describe, but damage to the brain--whether from accidents, diseases like alzheimers, or just old age--is so crippling I imagine a technological repair--and then by extension enhancement--will be in really heavy demand.

Sometimes future predictions from the past are hilariously off-base, but other times they're right on. We don't have personal airships yet and likely will never have "ocean trains" (lol) but we certainly do have TV, police X-ray scanners, and are getting closer to roofed cities. FASA did actually license those from a company that believed they had distribution rights and stopped using them of their own volition after lawsuits about Robotech that Battletech had nothing to do with. The Reseen came from fans wanting them to still be in the game while Catalyst didn't want to dive into the shitpit that is the Macross rights. It's disingenuous to call them ripoffs, despite them being redesigned Macross mechs. They became part of the game when they were (as far as FASA knew) legitimately paid for.

That said, I actually like most of the Reseen. Except the Reseen Battlemaster. What the fuck and why, Catalyst?

A lot of this thread doesn't have that though, so that's nice.

West nofeets are more like weird interpretations of hooves. Eastern ones are more like high heels, boots, or standing on tiptoe.

Because the same hoof-footed designs appear in Battletech and Robotech, and those are the things that popularized the "western-style" design aesthetic. The thing is, they're originally Japanese designs.

Speaking of Star Wars and terrible decisions, can we talk about how Joe Johnston's AT-ST is way cooler than the one that actually went into the movie?

What?
The guy asked a question, I said, "oh, it's usually reelism", then "it's in Jap stuff too", I say "yeah, it's kinda different in Jap stuff IMO", other guys says, "It's really something that came from Japanese designs in the first place", I say, "Yeah, but I hate RT and BT."

I still think what I said is somewhat true, but I guess it does look like some kinda ruse cruise or something. I think pin feet and the like in Western stuff often seems to be different in purpose than Jap stuff. Is this still trolling? Am I being dense? I've been quoted twice.
