It's not really in the same bag with Ankoku Makai Kishi Hen and Youseki no Wana. Those two novels were written by Yuuji Kobayashi, who was just the scriptwriter for the first series and one MAKAISENKI episode, while Hagane no Houkou was written by Kei Taguchi, who is a core member of GARO Project creative team, second only to Amemiya.

First, they're not shfa, they're Makai Kado.
Second, going by >>13575292 picture, the scale is actually pretty spot on, New Garo doesn't look much shorter than fucking Koukaku Juushin Garo even though New Garo's pose is lowering him. It's probably taller than the first Garo (as it should be, because OG Garo was the dwarf of the line). They just made Kiba huge in the E&P/Makai Kado line (a wise decision in my opinion).

Garo is rendered in a different style and ends up moving very stiffly and mechanically (when he actually DOES move). A lot of fights so far have boiled down to Raikou standing still and staring at the Horror until it rushes at him, then he swings once and it's over.
It's kind of jarring and a bit of a letdown when the Knights in KnK were so fluid and animated.
