Newtypes on their own seem to get stronger every generation. In 0079 they seemed capable of precognition which gave them increased reflexes and spatial awareness (you know, because of being in SPACE) but by the end of the one year war they communicating to each other telepathically during intense emotion.
Then by Zeta and ZZ you have some Newtypes who could use their minds to attack or influence others (Ham and Roco Pebbles) and by 100 UC you've got full blown telepathic messages being casually sent through FEELING (Little Zabi, Banana, and Worst Boy).
That's all without any psychoframe shit. With psychoframe new types can control funnels, create i-fields that are far superior than other ones, manipulate other suits and hi-jack funnels and even increase the output of beam weaponry via SHEER WILL.

Why do these two guys have such an irrational hatred of each other, to the point of doggedly pursuing one another across the entire war? NEWTYPE CONNECTION: they fucking hate each other! That was so much easier than coming up with a reason that makes sense, and you never even have to explain it!
And so on and so forth. Newtype abilities are literally powers that are used to advance the plot without having to dedicate any real thought on the part of the writers. It goes beyond just being better at fighting or whatever, being a newtype is a free pass to just randomly know what the plot needs you to know, be where the plot needs you to be, like what the plot needs you to like and hate what the plot needs you to hate, topped off with the perfect excuse for your ability to do bullshit as the need arises.
There is NOTHING that a character can do in gundam that cannot be explained away with the proper invocation of 'he is a Newtype'.

Asem was shit though, because he was just magically good all of a sudden when the plot demanded he be. Honestly, it didn't even come off like he was good. It came off like the enemy suddenly became retarded and just stood around waiting for him to kill them and worse still, like he wasn't even a normal type, he came off as someone with anti-x-rounder powers given the "why can't I sense what he's doing" line. Garrod was better, since he at least was part of a decent show and gradually improved as things went along, including (quite literally) falling flat on his face at least once when he got cocky.
