Just started watching pic related, but I haven't read the manga or anything. It's pretty good, but I don't know if it will go to shit or pretend that it's something else by the time the halfway point comes like Shin Mazinger. Should I drop it until I read the manga, or just bite the bullet and take Imagawa's dick up my ass?
>>
>>13484881
Bite the pillow. It's nowhere near as zany as Shin Mazinger but you're right to suspect it's not solely MOTW

You're kinda new if you assume having access to and reading a long 50s-60s manga is a viable option.

The manga will never be translated, and well, it's not exactly the same. Manga was story arc based, Imagawa took some elements and plot points from it, made it into a overreaching plot, removed some of the pulp-like more silly stuff (originally, Robby wanted to wipe out all humanity to create a robot kingdom) and tied different story arcs together (originally, Bracchus was created by Franken, it was not american-made and he would appear in the Monster storyline instead of Black OX). Probably the closest stories to the manga were Superhuman Kelly (minus the astronaut part, even if Kelly was modified for space exploration) and the Fire II/Fire III storyline with the Robot competition and everything. Oh, Dr. Black arc was a lot bigger too, and while the overall plot is the same, it's a bit more silly originally, where you can see his son and he's full grown up, but looks like a zombie. Well, manga is pretty good even so, but don't expect it to be as dramatic as Imagawa's rendition. Ironically, it's still the most faithful adaptation around, even if it's take on Kenji Murasame is closer to the 60s anime than the original manga.
>>
This is my favorite anime alongside the Cyborg 009 2001 series.

Not if SystematicChaos from HnG can help it. That guy is the biggest Yokoyama fan I've heard of that's in a fan translation group, and he otherwise doesn't care about /m/ stuff for the most part. If anyone can do it, it's him.

How does Naoki Urasawa's Pluto compare to the original manga as an adaptation if you've read it out of interest?
>>
>>13486113

The manga is way too big. It's relatively easy to understand, though. So it would not be as tricky as something like... Sabu and Ichi, for example... But sitll, I think he's more into the more serious historical works than classic Yokoyama like Tetsujin or Iga no Kagemaru.

I read just one or two volumes. Well, I think Imagawa's Tetsujin is a lot closer to the original than Pluto, if only for the aesthetics alone. Imagawa added some deep to the characters as in the original, Shotaro and Otsuka are basically full time crime fighters, you don't get to see any of their daily lives other than investigating a crime or something like that. Basically, Shotaro is a genius boy detective, some incident happens, he and Otsuka goes to investigate it, discover some conspiracy, at some point the villains have robots, Tetsujin comes to help (and sometimes, Black Ox, he's much more of a secondary hero than a villain in the original, even if he and Tetsujin clash a few times). No one seems to address the fact that a 10-year-old boy is involved in police investigation, driving cars or carrying a gun. And criminals actually are aware of and even fear Shotaro.

It's not like he's against doing a challenge anyway. No other place can claim to have over 1500 consecutive days of releases, after all.

Also, his group is willingly translating the Shinseikiden Mars anime, and this place knows about that show's reputation.

Oh yeah, I'm not sure why bother with that show at all. If at least it was the 90s OAV.

Well, one thing that gets a little tricky with Tetsujin is that there's too different versions of it! For example, in the original origin story, Shotaro's father was not involved in Tetsujin's creation at all, that was a retooled origin story for the Kappa Comics edition. One possible solution would be translate everything, but it can gets really confusing for some people. Tetsujin was originally supposed to be a one-shot, Tetsujin was not the hero, it was more like "he can be good or bad, depending on who controls it" and he only appears around 3/4 of the original storyline. Imagawa's version was definitely using Kappa Comics as a reference, but then, Kenji Murasame and the Murasame brothers have a much bigger role in the original version. I think Imagawa was being inspired by the 60s manga were the Murasame brothers are introduced in the first episodes, and sometimes, Kenji shows up as a secret agent who comes at Shotaro's aid in some episodes, but he's not a recurrent character in the original manga past the origin story (the original version, not the retooled one about Shotaro's father and Shikishima being refugees in the island and everything).

Ohhh, another thing was added by Imagawa was Miss Takamizawa. She doesn't exist in the manga. But her design is the same as Otsuka's wife. She doesn't really have a very prominent role, though.

Sorry, I meant the 60s anime! The one that became Gigantor in the US.

Unfortunately, there's not available RAWs on the internet save for the first volume (the original origin story). I had to pay for mine and as far as I know, there's no way to rip everything. I read it on a iPad from a japanese ebook service.

Oh, just to correct myself. Kenji shows up again in the Monster/Thrill Suspense storyline. And he's very similar to Imagawa's rendition. Not sure if it will happen again, though. This edition don't put stories in the right order, as later volumes have more primitive art than the earlier ones.

Very poorly done and take way more liberties to the source material than the Astro Boy anime from the same era. The animation for the first batch of episodes is laughably bad.

That's rather a constant for Tetsujin 28 across the board, though, isn't it? Aside from Imagawa's, and even then Ox ends up helping a few times.
>>
>>13487774

Yeah, Black Ox is more of a tragic hero than a villain most of the times. But then, a lot of people are under the impression he's Tetsujin's nemesis or something... The never produced american cgi movie and the japanese live action movie both tried to pass him as the big bad. And also the Docomo commercials.

A little bit OT, but not too much since it's related to Yokoyama.
Does any official merchandise for Big Fire (the character that is) exist? Figure, statue etc.
It seems I can't find anything...
>>
>>13489666
GR's Big fire isn't really big fire. BF is from t28 and that character (gr BF) is from another manga.
and no merch cause yokohamas family hates money and hates his work.
>>
>>13489666
also the only character that got figures was Ginrei and GR1 and GR2
>>
>>13489704
I know he's Babil. And I found some statues of the Elite Ten online, but I couldn't understand wheter they were official merchandise (they were really detailed and strongly resembling the character) or not

I really don't know. The possible release of the SRC model for Giant Robo gave me hopes for some figuarts models fo the characters

Well I sure am learning a bunch about the original T28 manga today.

Also to OP's question - you don't need to read the original manga at all. I don't know of any english-language-first who does really, for obvious reasons.
