I got a question, I know nothing of Fafner at all. I see quite a few people going nuts about Exodus though. The original series and one of the movies just came out on bluray and it's a pretty good price. I was thinking of picking it up and jumping in. Is it worth it? Is there anything it compares to?

I'm pretty open to anything really, I'm just hoping for some enjoyable fights and an interesting world.

Obvious thread bias aside, it is very well worth it if you can get over a few of the shortcomings from the start of the series.

The only thing that hasn't been licensed is the prequel OVA, which was made after the original series aired. There have been some positive results from watching that before you jump in, as the series has a somewhat slow first few episodes.
>>
>>13470135
>interesting world
Get in
By the way 20-30$ for a full season + a movie is dirt cheap
>>
>>13470135
First 10-14 episodes of the original series are all world building and character establishment.
Everything after is pay off.

It's decent but not remarkable on it's own, it's the pay off that makes it great if you go back in hind sight.

If you finish the series, make sure to watch the Ova because it's a prequel but there's no official English release so you just gotta download it. If you liked the first series and decide to rewatch it to catch things you miss, know that there are audio drams and novels that also fill in some information and gaps.

Animation in original isn't spectacular but the jump in quality is evident between the first series and the ova, then the ova and the movie, and then the movie and the new series.

Fafner's an upward scale. You ever see that graph made to describe GaoGaiGar? Fafner's quality is like that. Once it starts going up it never stops going up.

Go for it
>>
>>13470135
> I'm just hoping for some enjoyable fights and an interesting world.
It's the perfect series for you then, Fafner is pretty hefty on the world and character building.

>Is there anything it compares to?
Nope. You'd be hard pressed to really draw some legitimate similarities to other shows.

The Festum alone are pretty iconic in themselves and stand out far as most alien races go and are pretty menacing.

The setting alone is fairly unique the main cast are the population of a almost paradise like island but are fully aware they're just survivors drifting on the seas in a hellish post apocalyptic world. Instead of the usual population oblivious to some dark secret.

It's also one of the few shows which manages to get the 'knowledge before power' and 'understanding' themes so many mecha series manage to cock up spectacularly. It's also fairly consistent which is quite lacking with a lot of series which drop plot points and forget about them all the time.

>The original series and one of the movies just came out on bluray and it's a pretty good price.
Don't know about the original series but the movie's official subs are absolutely attrociously timed with lots of confusing gibberish. There are some fixed subs lying around you can ask some other anon for but I don't know if they would work with the official thing too since they were made to work with a rip of the official BD.
>>
>>13470135
>I'm just hoping for some enjoyable fights and an interesting world.
World gets interesting halfway through the first season.

Fights don't get enjoyable till Exodus. The first season's are markedly bad, and that's when they're not "sortie the Fafners!" (cut to HQ) "all enemies defeated!"
>>
>>13470205
>first seasons
>Bad

You're exaggerating or being a faggot. Not enough GIGA DRILL BREAKER for you? They might not be the prettiest but they're enjoyable and Heaven and Earth had good ones too.
>>
>>13470033
Putting aside the identity of the pilot, I'm happy the Dreizehn will fight again.

It was only in the last thread that I heard that it's supposed to have incorporated elements of the Babylon. Which explains it's unique appearance, I guess.
>>
>>13470205
>>13470215
The first series doesn't have the best animation and the fights aren't spectecular like they are in the movie or Exodus, BUT they are still very much enjoyable and well done.
>>13470237
I think we can all agree on that
>>

Thanks for all the input! I will most definitely check it out now. I'm fine with slower burns, especially if it's establishing the world and characters. I'll also remember to find the OVA and pick up the good subs, then continue on to the new series. I also already like the idea of everyone being in on the whole "yeah shit's fucked" instead of slowly uncovering it. The rest of the setting has me intrigued as well.

I like to just randomly pick up 20ish dollar series on amazon and run through them with little prior knowledge. Gankutsuou worked out very well and I felt like going for another. so when I saw Fafner pop up and remembered all the buzz about the new series, I had to ask. Thanks again.

>>

>>
>>13470247
>I also already like the idea of everyone being in on the whole "yeah shit's fucked" instead of slowly uncovering it.

Most of the cast understands it. It's the kids who had it hidden will be dealing with a bit of culture shock and ideal shock for the first arc of the series. There will be something that the main character does in the early episodes that you'd say "Of course he should have done that. That's what a good person does" but then you'll realize that he really SHOULDN'T have done it and a lot of unpleasant things start coming their way out of it.
>>
>>13470260
>a lot of unpleasant things start coming their way out of it
Fafner in a nut shell
>>
I really liked the focus on family and stuff in Fafner. Just so used to seeing neglectful parenting or evil adults in anime that Fafner was a good change of pace.
>>

>>
>>13470288
Yeah Koyo and Sui had some god tier parents right?
>>
>>13470331
Koyo's were an outliner.
Sui's were clearly stuck grieving and have gotten over it.
>>
>>13470337
Koyo's were such jerks really. It's almost sweet how two utter assholes found each other.

Still, I've always felt that was a dropped plot thread. I've suspected that Alberich was probably supposed to actually play a role in the original DA and the fact they were dropped completely was one of Tow's major changes.
>>
>>13470442
I think the ultimate role they were meant to show was the humanity in the adults. That the adults weren't just using the kids to survive. They weren't part of any important island staff and WERE leaking secrets to the NUNS, which Fumihoko was tolerating because he really didn't just want to start banishing people/ruin the culture of peace they were trying to preserve, but then they crossed the line.

And who knows? They MIGHT be with the Indian refuges.

Just caught up to the latest ep.
Walter's confession makes me wonder how Sky kun 2 might respond to him. The Mir might be a bit upset about being nuked twice.
>>
>>13470465
Well, Walter's fucking fodder for Akira's character development.

So I doubt it'll be an issue.

And if Sky-Kun 2 is holding grudges, Kenji's little escapade in their Mir's birthing chamber probably won't be overlooked either.

He didn't die. He got assimilated, then through the power of dead Shoko love, he got his mind "mostly" back, then he became a "Slave-type" Festum. Sakura saved his body though.

He was the major angsty kid.

He showed up in H&E too before getting BTFO'd by Nicht, but he teleproted away before dying.

Hm, then Emery is probably being spied on through that. Maybe she doesn't even know.
>>
I made a mistake last thread. I was tired. I said that there are currently 6 types of Mir, and that Roadrunner was a 7th.

As of episode 13, there are 7 current Mir variants
D-Island, Ashoka, and then 5 Azazel types. Presumably Bollearios is included in that list of 5 although it's still only conjecture suggest that Bollearios has the capacity to manifest an Azazel type. That still leaves Walker, Belcross, and likely Smaug.
Now it's possible that they were including Roadrunner's nommed Mir as one of the 7 active Mir types, but I kinda doubt it.
If they weren't including RR's Mir we still have at least one entirely new Azazel type to look forward to as well as Altair's arrival.
If Bollearios and Roadrunner's devoured Mir are not included in the count, then that raises the count to TWO more new Azazel types.

I can't see any way this doesn't get a capstone movie. I'm 100% alright with that too.

Maybe we can get a cool OVA flashback following some NUNs

>>13471094
Spied on by whom? Ashoka? Polaris is kill, and Ashoka is already right there with the Exodites so it doesn't really need to spy on her. Smaug doesn't need anyone to have connection with an Azazel type to monitor them either.

If they're all Polaris fragments, I'm thinking Ashoka is mostly good like island mir, but there's a part of it that's leaking against it somehow.
>>
>>13471174
Well, my personal theory is that it's playing the long game.
Let's look at some stuff.
It basically had Emery, who I think is a good person, turn D-Island more militant. This would exhaust the Island's fighting strength as well as postpone or defeat another opponent Azazel type.
Next, it's letting Sein and Nicht, the two most powerful human weapons, protect it.
It's now being escorted to a safe haven another Mir established.
Also, Hester says that all the Mir flavors are trying to defeat each other to receive Altair.
This doesn't exactly mean Ashoka is a bad entity, like Belcross or Walker clearly are, but she just wants to win the Altairbowl by default.

Also, D-Island's Mir isn't a Polaris fragment (as far as we know).
I suppose it could've broken off from Polaris in ancient times, but in any event, the Polaris of DA and Island Mir have always been considered separate.

Didn't the timeline in the Exodus site say the island Mir is from the ancient Japan Mir and Polaris was a recent arrival via meteor?

Fafner has had a few staff oddities in general.

Interesting to note the series composer for the first series has vanished off the face of the Earth and the original writer also hasn't written anything else for anime since except a Futari H OVA last year. This is his official company website I believe.

Another oddity is Nobuyoshi Habara has acted as the Director for DA, Exodus and RoL but actually didn't take part in the H&E movie.

They actually brought in a new Director AND Chief Director for H&E. Toshimasa Suzuki (storyboarded RoL) and Takashi Noto shared Directorial duties they had worked before on Heroic Age in the same roles and Suzuki was also the director for Rin-ne no Lagrange too.

Oddly whilst Takashi Noto stayed Chief Director for Exodus Habara reprised his role as Director. Toshimasa Suzuki has done nothing in Exodus except the storyboard for the last ep of S1.

D-Island is the name ALVIS has been referred to by the Mir
Ashoka is also mentioned
Belcros s is something the threads have been using because of the design similarities to Belcross
Roadruner is used in the show
Walker is used in the show
Smaug is something the threads have been using because it looks like a Dragon
Bollearios is the name of the aircraft carrier in H&E

Lurk moar.

>>13471233
I had suspected that maybe he was using an old leftover satelite from the initial conflict.
This past episode more or less confirmed a similar idea.
>>13471246
I can't remember if it was a meteor, specifically off the top of my head, but yeah, they arrived in completely different eras.
>>
>>13471228
I disagree, I think Ashoka is mostly good like island mir. Otherwise it would make no sense for them to find peaceful festum forests and stuff. It just wants to coexist, however it is probably infected by the yellow boy like a "virus" and I think Tatsumiya got infected too when they spoke.
>>
>>13471262
I specifically meant Smaug and Bollearios when I asked that.
>>
>>13471266
Also, even if Ashoka isn't speaking to Polaris, I think they infected Tatsumiya. When Emery spoke to Orihime, she made her more militant and want to build more "eternal soldiers", even though she wants to protect everyone Emery fucked her up.
>>
>>13471272
>Also, even if Ashoka isn't speaking to Polaris
*other fragments
>>
>>13471262
>D-Island is the name ALVIS has been referred to by the Mir
I thought that was the NUN's who called it that not the Mir.
>>
>>13471266
I specifically said I don't think it makes Ashoka bad, and let me add anti-peace.
Also, why wouldn't it chill in the forest? They got resources. If they went and attacked it that would wear them out.
Ashoka is basically using everyone for her own ends. If, in the process of wooing Altair, potential antagonists are defeated prematurely, so be it. D-Island doesn't need to exist for Altair to be made into a hippie.
>>13471272
Emery for sure isn't the bad egg. Now Narain and his experiments might have done something.
>>13471291
Well, the Mir hasn't ever actually called itself anything.
The NUNs have called ALVIS both D-Island and API-1. The Mir is officialy the Seto Inland Sea Mir.
D-Island is the most current term associated with the island so I rolled with that, although API-1 is easier to type.

>>>Can we give the island Mir a nickname?
>>
>>13471291
>>13471306

Oh duh of course it's immediately after my post I realize see what I did.
Yes, Mir should be NUNs, sorry
>>
>>13471306
Emery isn't bad, and neither is the mir I think, but we don't know exactly what she is. She is a link of communication between the human army mir and the island's mir. I think they had some UNDERSTANDING convo in that moment, which is why immediately after Orihime's eyes flash gold, and then they start making the new cores.

I think Ashoka is on the side of humans, but urging the humans to "fight harder" against NUNS and Festum which Tatsumiya doesn't want, However Ashoka talked Tatsumiya into it then which is why Orihime is colder and trying to make their fighting strength better. It would be retarded for Ashoka to have been plotting against the people it was protecting for however long and turned people into esparantos and stuff to help them
>>
>>13471329
I still don't think Ashoka is malicious or intending to get rid of people, you keep assigning that position to me.

I do think that it is ambitious, and in the process of fighting doesn't mind too terribly if even the peaceful Mir entities are destroyed, as long as the job (making sure Altair becomes a peacefag) gets done.

>Also, Re: nickname
How about SISM?
Short for Seto Inland sea Mir. It rolls of the tongue too
"Siz-em"
>>
>>13471359
Is that the original name? I like calling it Tatsumiya or Avlis better, if it could pick its own name, it probably would be those
>>
>>13471396
Yeah, that's what it was called when it was originally uncovered.
Calling it ALVIS or Tatsumiya lends itself to a bit of confusion unless you say
ALVIS's Mir or Tatsumiya's Mir.

I suppose by that same token, so does referring to Bollearios's Mir as Bollearios. Maybe Mirsao is better lol? Although I think most people would think that to be a typo.
>>
>>13471255
Takashi Noto was already one of the guys in charge in S1 and RoL. I remember him explaining some years ago on Twitter that he made Nobuyoshi Habara extend the final scene of RoL because he thought the planned one was too short or something like that. Sorta, kinda. He was the producer for the original Fafner but it was shared duties between several producers and they were the most junior.

For RoL they were the Literature researcher, basically the guy who reads up on everything and makes sure the random references make fucking sense and details the world setting. In the end the guy was very backstage in his role.

It wasn't till H&E onwards he really took full charge.

This has been explained numerous times before.

Koyo got assimilated. However, he managed to get his mind back, mostly, and became a new designation of Festum. The Slave-type.

What's the deal with the wiki project anyways? I'm getting pretty tired of explaining this shit to people that won't use the archive.

When she chats with Canon in Ep. 3, Maya says she doesn't know if she's fighting and learning how to pilot a jet for Kazuki's sake, rather that's it's just become something she's been doing /because/
She ain't the little girl anymore.

It's sad
>>

>Canon is the youngest 1st gen pilot, and even younger than the Nishio twins
Honestly didn't expect that.
>I'm one day away from sharing a birthday with GOUBINE
Nice.
>>
>>13472385
I mean, you'd never expect Canon to be the youngest considering she was the most mature.

But I guess living in Irish Slums and fighting Festum for a few years does that to you.
>>
>>13472397
Of course, she's the "oldest" because stress wrecked her. Just like Shouko (a sheltered girl), being older than almost all the other 1st generation pilots looked the youngest.
>>
>>13472410
Canon's voice, and size didn't really help.

>>
>>13472531
It would have been nice for RoL to be longer or for Xebec to go back and addon to it so we could've been able to sympathize with it's characters more.
I mean it was still sad but now they're saying that people in Exodus have family who took part in that operation and they barely got screen time and had no lines, it's kinda hard to relate to those characters due to that
>>
>>13472603
It's just Sui's family and the Priest chick.

The relevant people in RoL died in RoL. Sui's family drama just uses RoL as a means to drive it, because even if we didn't KNOW her we knew the situation she was in by proxy and how it affected the island and the priest chick is just a minor character.

It's to tie the Ova more into it.
>>
>>13472603

I'm a bit upset.
>>
>>13472633
>And what's with this myth that you have to "know" characters for their deaths to get married?
I know that it's not necessary but if sui had had a few flashback scenes of her or somehting earlier in the series or HaE it could've at least help.

Also what did you mean by they did extend it? is there a longer version?
>>
>>13472709
Yes, but it's basically more characterization for Ryou, Yumi and a bit for Shouko and Karin
>>
So in Ep. 5 when Ian looks at the Manga issue, he says
"You're amazing, Nishio-sensei"
I think he's referring to the fact that Granny was the one that commissioned it as educational material--in episode one or two, iirc.

That's the only was it makes sense.

And he actually says Nishio, not Kodate. It's possible they recorded the line wrong--doubtful, but I'm wondering if there's a way that I can phrase it that makes more sense, but doesn't butcher what Ian is saying.

If Misao's Mir is separate, then that leaves 2 more Azazel types.

Someone expected Fafner to be the Hiraiface gundam copypasta.

They got a show about UNENDING DESPAIR
>>
>>13473030
We had guessed Kenji getting it because he uses the Seigfried System. On that note, after Kenji's SDP activates Koyo is teleported to the island, then warps to the battlefield where he regenerates his Fafner, assimilates Sui's weapon, and does some twisting thing to Walker. All of those are other people's SDPs. Maybe Kenji's ability is to let each team member use each others powers?
>>
>>13473197
We don't know, but that would be a useful ability for Kenji to have, considering his triple work load.

I mean MOST of the abilities were things Koyo could already do as a Festum.

Kenji DID something but we don't know what.

Also the realiaztion is dawning on me that Sein needs to step up it's game somehow. It use to be the Fafner that stuck out the most but nearly every other one has outpaced it now

Koyo is a Festum, he has innate SDP.

I'm not sure the twisty bubbling thing was really caused by SDP, but rather just an effect from getting damaged.
Sein damaged Roadrunner's hand in that fashion too.
Hell even Akira's Dragon Tooth causes the same bubbling effect on a Sphinx type in ep. 2

That'd be pretty cool, but I doubt it.

Yeah the idea's seemingly been there from the start, just never really front and center, always just a little worldbuilding note about discovering the Mir.

Which makes it easy to ignore if you like, I suppose. I think DA did mention that uncovering the Mir is what attracted the Festum, though.

I'm curious, do you guys want the two inserts of Exist in Eps. 7 & 13

On Sono Toki, I'm trying to figure out how to put it on there in a way that doesn't distract from the action too much.

The native subs are vertical and on the side of the screen and it looks really nice, but English doesn't really yield itself to that, unfortunately.

Like the scene were Orihime says "the [islanders] were planning to abandon them" immediately after talking about having Soushi and Kazuki go to Srinigar. "them" is obviously Sein and Nicht, but it isn't immediately clear. Orihime's extra dry delivery doesn't help either.

While we're on the topic of CR subs being terrible, I've been wondering about something translation-wise. People have been bringing up "limiters" on Sein and Nicht for a while, when did that come up exactly?

I'm just wondering if that might have been an odd translation for "restraints" since the two did start off with some kinky bondage in Exodus. Like, I do remember the term coming up in the subs, but it's been too long since I watched the earliest episodes.

If they did actually say limiter out loud in engrish or something then I'm just forgetful, but it seems like the kind of thing Fafner would explain in more detail. Wouldn't mind being proven wrong though, just curious.

The bindings in the early episodes are to keep the mechs from interacting with their surroundings and gobbling them up. Also to make it harder for infiltrators to get inside them.

Maya actually does say "limiter" in episode 9 while Kaz is God'ing out, unless I'm completely deaf. I think Soushi mentions it in ep. 6 as well.

I think Doc Hino said something about dampers/suppressors in DA too, but I might be imagining that.

Mehitak with hair, plz go

It is with the mainstream crowd. Especially with people that have never watched a /m/ show before. There were people even hailing it as "the best mecha show ever".

All those poor souls that haven't seen Infinite Stratos II

Indeed. They need salvation, by assimilation.

That was me, sorta, after the first episode. I watched all the gundams and a bunch of other shit since then.

Threadly reminder that Drs. Hino and Bartland are the Grandfathers of Hope and the Fathers of Existence and Nothingness.

Also, Soushi is the Architect of all your Pain, Festum

By all accounts a very accurate WEG. I'm not sure why I got on this sadistic ride but I enjoyed every moment of it now

It all stems back from the ending of the original series, H&E mentioned that Mark Sein assimilated the Nicht to stop it continuing to pursue them at the end of the series.

He ended up killing Idun by doing so but the Nicht itself persisted and was living within the Sein they ended up being bonded together through Crossing, it also explains the sudden redesign Nicht got when Misao extracted it from the Sein. He just ended up reshaping it the same way Kazuki remodeled the Sein when he first got it.

This is all confusing. But it sounds like you're saying the robots are the most important thing so I like it.

The one who want to believe that Kazuki and Soushi are homo are clinging to whatever they can.

The original ended with Koyo too.

>keep eachother calm
Listening to Soushi's gloomy rants keep people calm?
Would be funny if Soushi was the one who tries to calm Maya this ep.

>Toumi.
>Minashiro-kun.
>You've crossed the event horizon. You've finally learned that life is suffering and despair. I have nothing left to monologue about.
>... go away, Minashiro-kun.
>>
By the way, has the timeline ever been translated?
>>
>>13474443
>Wait, Toumi. You need to learn more about the despair and hopelessness that await us.
>I will shoot you, Minashiro-kun. Go away.
>>
>>13474425
Yeah I saw, doesn't make it any less funny, even as fan conjecture.
>>
>>13474455
>Wait Toumi, you forgot to take the breakfast
>Even Minashiro-kun can be considerate sometimes
>You will soon learn that true despair stems form the hopelessness of being left with only moldy hardtacks as rations.
>Sound of pistol whip

And someone should save it in case the site dies.

I might transcribe the whole thing if I get the itch and have some time.

A few of the detailed notes could REALLY use some touching up too, the "meal" being split into three parts is slightly misleading. Nevermind how some words like Albericht get treated.

Niberhaimu

If you know Japanese, check it with the original. The translation is really stiff and has some weird wording, not to mention that it calls Yumi "Yumi Koma" instead of Yumi Ikoma.
>>
>>13474503
That's odd, the English version has that in 2085 but the Japanese version lists the dividing of the Mir in 2098.

2098年
瀬戸内海ミールを三分割し、アルベリヒド機関、日本自衛軍(JSDFY)研究機機関、芳村の研究機関「国際エネルギー研究公社(IERC)」に保管
>>
I'm rewriting/correcting the English version of the timeline based on the stuff in the Japanese version
>>
>>13474517
Well, damn.

>>13474523
Ah, guess I'll leave it to you then.

Actually for anyone capable, does the timeline for the Nothung Model's completion line up between versions? The English one says they were finished twelve years before the series, which is bizarre.

But it could just be that they took years to manufacture, and the design was complete, which works.

You're great, anon. I love you.

You're a god between men. Thanks, Anon.

English version skips a LOT of stuff or just lumps it into single entries

2085
An unknown photon crystalline body is discovered in a huge crater at the bottom of the Seto Inland Sea.
Named the Seto Inland Sea Mir, the photon crystalline body is determined to be an intelligent life-form. Presented at the Astrobiological Society conference, it is analyzed under the direct control of the Japanese government.

2090
The Seto Inland Sea Mir's experience information reveals the existence of multiple forms of advanced intelligent life. The Nibelheim Project is started to extract scientific technology from it.

2093
Hypothesizing the existence of a super-ancient Mir, a theory is put forth that claims it was the Mir that caused apes to evolve into Homo sapiens.

2095
The similarities between the Mir genetic information and Human chromosomes is established, but the research results are covered up and Mir researched is transferred exclusively to Albericht.

2096
It is found that the super-ancient Mir caused apes to evolve into Homo sapiens. The Mir was fused to the human chromosome, and is being passed on even to the present day.

2098
The Seto Inland Sea Mir is divided into three parts and stored by Albericht, the JSDF, and International Energy Research Company.

Damn this really is much more detailed.

Seriously, thank you, any more official info we can get feels great.
