A month and a few days after it's creation, the previous thread finally hit the bump limit and is heading toward the last page of the board. So here come this brand new 70s and 80s mecha thread to replace the older one and keep the legacy going. You had no access to a computer for the last month and are curious of what happened in the previous thread? Here it is >>13007940 , there's still time before it's too late.
Most of you already know the rules, right? If not, here's what this thread is for: argue, discuss and dump stuff like artworks, fanarts (if they're well made of course), sketches, magazines' scans, artbooks, DVD/VHS/LD/CD/BD's covers, ads, musics, screen-caps and so on, that have a link to a Sci-Fi and Mecha anime/comic/novel/film/OVA.

This one's on my backlog, been curious about it for a while. Mikimoto actually did the chara designs

It's not really anything special, but it's nice. The best part is that it uses music from the games, and a few of the bosses show up.

cool, I'll give it a watch
>>13207752
Have a nice watch. It's not exceptional, but it's definitely enjoyable.

Japan does love their Moai. After all, Konami themselves made a game about a heroic Moai.
>>13209664
It helps that it was animated during Pierrot's golden age.
>>13209684
oh snap, it's a Pierrot? I'm definitely watching it soon then
I watched some of Tobikage because animesols did it and I loved the use of pastel colors, which now that I look at it again is in that Gradius screenshot I posted. I think Pierrot always had a bunch of extra pastel paints sitting around because of their magical girl shows, and that made their shounen and mecha stuff look really unique
That is one moe man.

So I'm watching Salamander now. This show really represents some of the best things about classic anime sci-fi. Like you can tell they took the rather simple concepts from the games and had an awesome time bringing those ideas to life. The scenes with the black cloud turning planets into living organic horrorscapes are awesome. And I loved the bit how they riff on the enemies in Gradius coming in those static waves that only fire upon the player if they get too close, and talk about how they're automated ships that are meant to catch capitol ships and armadas, their waves strung out like a "fishing net in space." COOL. The animation in those scenes is competent too. The gore-planets look especially good. Pierrot was having fun with this.
On the downside, boy can the characters talk. And talk. And then talk about what they just talked about again. Seems like the show is broken into chunks of blathering repetitive talky exposition, and then the exciting cool bits where the shooter ideas get tried out and things actually happen. Hopefully the pacing gets better in the later episodes.
>>13221814
I was very pleasantly surprised by it.
nothing amazing but for "ovas based on shooting games" it did a decent job
>>13220504
Those mechs and the Kamen Rider Black-like soundtrack are enough for me to give it a try.

It's one step closer to another 80s show finally being completed.
>>13241571
Oh nice. I didn't know it was at least decent enough to run for that long.

It helps that it's another Studio Pierrot work. Plus, Shigenori Kageyama worked on some fun things, like one of the Fandora episodes and Luna Varga (not /m/ or 80s, although it did come out one year after Jecy ended). On a related note, Orphan are also working on another work Kageyama was involved in to some extent.
>Bavi Stock 1 and 2 - translated. The VHS rip of episode 2 needs to be encoded.
Not sure if anyone here is interested, but I joined a subgroup and we just put out the first episode of Wonder Beat Scramble. I think it counts as mecha, they go in a spaceship and get micronized to heal bodies from the inside. It's a little crazy. And Tezuka talks about eyes at the end.

>Too bad they can't really work on Daikengo as much as they do on Daltanius and Dai Apolon

>>13252254
Not him, but this is from one of their updates:
>First of all, I want to apologize for the lengthy delay in this release. Two months ago, I had a medical emergency that was unavoidable that rendered me unable to release or work on any subs. I’m much better now, so thank you for understanding.
>Also, blind51de has been bombarded with multiple projects, so he was unable to assist in these episodes. In his place, I’ve enlisted another translation checker: Kiseki 83. This selfless person was able to do translation checking on these scripts. Also, Onibaba did some spot translation checking in Episodes 07 and 09. Please, thank them both for assisting in making these subbed videos come to fruition.
Granted, it doesn't help that the group they're doing the joint with (TMUSubs) is still busy trying to do the rest of their Cat's Eye releases (which is evidently taking an eternity).
>>13237598
The three main robots have pilots as of Episode 3 or so.
They spend half the show looking for ninjas, who are the only people capable of piloting the three robots.
There's a lot of shit in Tobikage, and I do mean A LOT of shit, but even just from that premise you should be able to sight a fatal flaw.
Anyone here have seen Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross?
>>13254623
Yes. It's really poor.
>>13255043
Unfortunately, this. There's some interesting stuff in there, but it's just not a good show, altogether.
>>13255043
>>13255045
Okay, but here's my question: Is it true the ending is confusing, because it isn't. Basically,Seifreit throws Jeanne into an escape pod and blows up the main Zor ship, with him staying, and as the ship explodes, pieces fall into the three caves containing Flowers of Life.
>>13255165
I didn't find it confusing, no. It was just funny in how it failed to convey any sense of urgency, I think that throws people off - they believe they saw a major character death, but nothing about it feels like one.
>>13251420

Anyone know anything about old animation techniques? Wondering how they do the shading in pic related. It looks like it's drawn with crayon or one bumpy cardstock, not painted on a cel.
>>13258442
>Wondering how they do the shading in pic related.
Scribbles with a big beefy pencil. No, really!
>>13254623
It's pretty decent. It's a poor man's Macross. You can tell they were trying to recreate the magic, and unlike the actual Macross sequels they focused on the right elements. Worth a watch.
>>13258442
Some 9B pencil like >>13258549 said.
Daltanious episode 25 is out. Luurah is somewhat on fire lately.
Am I allowed to ask about sequels to either 1970s or 1980s shows that aired in the 1990s, like say, Orguss 02?
>>13258549
>>13259948
Using pencil on a cel?
>>13261899
Well, even though most pencils may not leave traces on a celluloid sheet (they do on polyester sheets), I'm sure charcoal pensil or a big 9B could could. Maybe I'm just wrong, maybe it's some kind of paintbrush and paint I don't know about, but these marks look like big graphite/charcoal ones.
>>13262670
I'm almost certain xerography was in wide use in anime (the entirety of Tiger Mask wouldn't be possible without it). So that would be just graphite on paper.
https://youtu.be/6-8eXKmiVXg
>>13262820
I though they directly applied it on the cel, but it's true that your explanation make more sense.

It is one of the main mech from Dorvack. Hasbro being out of robots for their transformer series, they just licenced a bunch of mechs from various show and shit. What actually surprise me is that they didn't seems to have problems with Harmony Gold for using the VF-1 Valkyrie as Jetfire.
>>13283956
The SNES version is superior (although not 80s).
>>13284327
Even though the SNES version has better looking sprites, the arcade version is still better when it comes to movement decomposition, backgrounds & overall playfield. music and gameplay (the game loses it's charm without the 2 player mode, even with the more advanced move set), so no, the arcade version is definitely better.
>>13284059
They did actually. They put out a Jetfire for a convention and Harmony Gold raised a stink about it before being smacked down.
>>13285724
Ah well, didn't knew the did. How did they get away with it? Because if I recall correctly, Jetfire still appear in the more recent Transformers comics.

>>13254623
I'm almost finished it, so far it has been awful. One of the most boring mecha shows I have seen.
Southern Cross is the show Uchiyama Aki was supposed to design for first. The scraps left of it are like this.
What really sucked about Southern Cross was that it seemed as if they put quite a lot of work into the world building with its countless armor designs, military divisions, elaborate emblems, etc. and in the end you barelly saw anything of it.
I got an old model kit of it before I watched the show and was quite disappointed when it turned out that that guy only appeared for a few seconds.
It's also interesting that it started out as a samurai-themed show.
It seems like they had a lot of ideas with Southern Cross but just didn't know what they were doing. I had the same impression watching Orguss; you can tell the animators are young guys having a lot of fun and inserting references to shows they like, etc, but the pacing in most episodes was just comically awful. Like episodes would suddenly just end, with no denouement, and often not even at an appropriate moment. Just "some characters are talking, welp, now the episode's over." It was hard for me to imagine how that kind of thing even got past storyboarding.
>>13290121

Billvine's design really is kind of cool. I really like the claws on the wrist and the two cannons in it's back.
>>13325473
Bilbine suffers from two major problems. A coloration that looks absolutely hideous in the show, and the fact that it's completely removed from every other Aura Battler in style.
Also Dunbine is better.

>>13340591
>Are any of the shows he worked on worth watching?
Bit of a loaded question, since he was on a lot of 70s and 80s titles of theirs (of which many lack subs). I can say that the first Gatchaman series, Polymar and Casshan are good, though.
>>13341254
What about the Time Bokan series are any of those subtitled outside Yatterman?
>>13340591
I love it because it's a lot more varied in terms of the actual designs. I mean, I don't mind the style he picked up post-Mospeada (in fact, I think it's a feast for the eyes mostly), but I feel as if the overall variety of his character designs took a complete nose dive.

On one hand they slam down on every common-knowledge "recreational drug" like a gram of pot was the same as shitting in the emperor's natto, while on the other they have hordes of worker bees dependent on "energy drinks" that in long term use match the damages of amphetamines.
>>13360183
The difference between those 2 kinds of substance is that the latter is actually useful when you need to work while the former just make you stupid.
>>13359622
Why is it that the first thing I come across in this thread is something depressing?
In regards to Mospeada's opening song, "Ushinawareta Yume o Motomete (In Searching for Lost Legends)," can it also be translated as "In Searching for Lost Dreams," given that "Legend" and "Dream" use "Yume?"
>>13363208
Well it does make sense if your turn it like the latter.
>>13363208
I think everyone just refers to it as the "LONELY SOLDIER BOY"-song
>>13361530
>gundonar.jpg
>>13363208
That makes sense seeing how the lyrics include "lullaby"

Too bad they had to ruin what I think is a Skyline 2000 GTR for that car explosion scene.

I hope Babel II volume 4's translation will be finished soon.

I'm probably one of the few anons repeatedly asking for this show to get finally subbed for the last couple of years. My deepest gratitude, Orphan-kun.
Planning to watch L-Gaim and Layzner. Gut instinct is to stick with the TV series.
Would the OVAs be a better choice for either of them?
>Tfw they'll never get all the skull stones.
>>13375197
Watch the series, then check out the third L-Gaim OVA and the Layzner OVA as that adds a better ending to the series.
>>13377414
L-Gaim OVA3 is a sidestory set somewhere around the 2nd half, you watch it as well as the TV series. OVAs 1 and 2 are recaps.
>>13375197
>>13377414
>>13377697
Adding to that, a couple of omakes were attached to the end of both L-Gaim OVAs, so watch those too.
>>13377408
At least they'll eventually get full English subs, right..?

Thanks
Also, two things about the Love, Live, Alive OVA:
1. We know Yellow outed himself as a cross-dresser in the ending of the TV series, with the reporter interviewing him before his concert asking if Yellow still cross-dresses, and given what he wore later in the concert, is Yellow supposed to be applying Visual Kei?
2. Would the whole OVA be basically Yellow trying to get over PTSD, due to the fact after the concert, he encounters Stig, Ray, Mint, Houquet, Jim, and Aisha, and that, by leaving them as the slept, he got over it?

One question about Dougram: For Shigeru Chiba's character/Festo's replacement, is the romanization for his name supposed to be "George" or "Giorgio?"
>>13385932
I always took it at as Giorgio.

I've alway heard it as "Giorgio", it doesn't sound like "George" at all.

Too bad this one does look that good, the valkyrie armored lady box art looks better imo.

This guy's channel is pretty neat, I like how he has so many old /m/show karaoke vids.

>is Yellow supposed to be applying Visual Kei?
It certainly suits his effeminate, colorful persona along with the Glam and New Wave styles at the time.
>Would the whole OVA be basically Yellow trying to get over PTSD?
His flashbacks seem more like reminiscing, as if he's not so much traumatized over the war as he is longing to see the friends he made during that time. If there was any PTSD, he probably got over it within the two years between the show and the OVA.

Two years? I imagined it longer than that judging by how humanity was able to rebuild civilization after getting the Earth back. Likewise with the ruins Yellow visits at the beginning of the OVA.
Also, in regards to the flashback, given the fact Yellow met Stig and the others while fighting the Inbit, wouldn't him missing them be somewhat PTSD-ish?

Sasuraiger! Haven't seen the show yet, but I love Sasuraiger's design, the theme song is amazing, and the figure was dirt cheap on Amazon.

>>13400619
Such a shame that the line failed.
Sure, I wasn't too thrilled about the first ones since the paint of them wasn't exactly the most durable one and easily chippable due to some design-flaws but the later ones like Baldios, Gravion and the like were damn great and for "only" 3000yen worth the money.
>>13400612
There's only one episode subbed so far. But don't worry, Crinn is back on Baxinger, so it's only a matter of time before it gets translated.
>>13400749

Does this show has any subs? If no, is it likely to have them or for the moment learning moonrunes to understand it is the only option?
>>13411715
Very much the latter (since only a handful of eps and the movie are done). The only way it'll get subs now is if Luurah has little enough on his plate to get interested in picking it up, so feel free to learn moon.
>>13411715
If you know Italian you can watch it dubbed.

I see. Thanks for the infos.

Man, these are awesome. Thanks! I wish someone would rip the episodes into MP4s or MKVs or AVIs or something... those ISO files are freakin' gigantic.
Was the Great Mazinger manga fully translated? Everything I've tried to find of it seems to only give the first five chapters, and I really don't see it being that short given the way it cuts off after the fifth. I'd rather not have to watch the anime just because Mazinger Z's subs have huge filesizes like >>13415768 said.
>>13417934
Not at all, Dynamic Pro Scanlations is too busy doing Shin Zero. They did consider restarting it with Starseeker, though.
>>13418940
Thank, just wanted to make sure there weren't chapters I was missing.
>>13418940
I did the first volume of it, just been sidetracked, so it's being taken over by their other TL, I'm just assisting.
