So I was at licensing expo earlier today and I saw a Robotech booth.
I was surprised Robotech wasn't dead and buried but they were advertising a new tabletop game, reminded me of the X-Wing tabletop. And a new artbook too, looked like all original drawings not copying over Macross stuff.
But they also had fliers for a new series.

I thought of that too, but 7 has made a lot of money over the years due to Fire Bomber CD sales if nothing else and even if it wasn't a good money spinner it's just too old looking to put out as a new show. The most recent thing I know they [sorta] did was finally have an official release of the TV episodes they did for Minky Momo/Gigi. Well sorta. Whatever WIlliam Winckler Productions are the ones who released it, and they like compiled all the episodes into hour and a half-something movies which you can only buy and stream on Amazon. The conjecture is that this deal probably included all future works bearing the Macross name. HG sub-licensed their US license to ADV Films in 2005 who made a complete English dub of the original SDF Macross story. However, other than Plus, none of the other entries in the franchise got the same treatment either because it they generally suck or because they feel that the Japanese music just won't resonate with the US audience. One of the biggest reasons is that they want to sell re-badge Macross toys as Robotech since that is the only thing that they got a firm distributing rights on.

Well, after the anime crash of 2003 nobody because they're all lean operations that just try to make as much profit as they can. Maybe Crunchyroll or Sunrise if they really want to make a splash with new mecha on their streaming sites, but otherwise there are plenty of anime fish in the anime ocean.

To be fair, it's actually a pretty decent mid-80s sci-fi plot. As a cartoon, it was darker than most that aired on Saturday Mornings back then and so it is considered the pioneer of more serious approaches to anime. The novels go pretty crazy, and it's mostly coherent if not as good as Macross.

No it wasn't and its not being fair. Mishmashing 3 completely unrelated mecha anime into one arching story was the worst idea Macek could think off. Butchering and rewriting the story left so many plotholes especially in the "transition" between series. Re-editing some the animation didn't improve on it either.

Frontier's biggest let down is that the cast is a group of the same old one-dimensional archetypes we've seen before. It's like they were deliberately trying to check off every single anime trope.
Both series had potential with some things that they did really well, but in the end they are passable at best while being frustrating and predictable at their worst.
