I thought that Battletech was sucky at first, but then the silly designs grew on me and now I love them. Except for the Reseen, fuck the artists who did most of them. They aren't good looking like the copycat designs, they aren't lovably silly like the BT originals; they're just butt ugly.

Overlapping plates is an old armorer's trick. It allows you a degree of flexibility without exposing the joints.
The jagged edges came out of the US skunkworks of all places. It's a feature for reducing the radar signature of seams.

I've been playing Hawken a lot lately. the new devs are doing some good work with it so far. They're working on networking and other issues first and foremost, and seem to have plans for new mechs and maps eventually.
They did change out the starting mech from the CRT to the Assault. Part of reason being, that the TV-looking mech was, at best, aesthetically abrasive to most people.
They also give you the assault fully loaded with stuff that increases survivability a bit so new players have more time to learn what's killing them.
Lot of people were worried when the game got picked up by Reloaded but they've been treating it well so far.
