So what does /m/ rhink of Iron Man?

Favorite suit? Favorite Story arc? Favorite Tony? (Mainstream 616, Ultimates, MCU, etc.)
>>
He's been my favorite Superhero since I was a kid, granted when I was like 4 I thought he was just a robot.

>Extremis
>Extremis and Civil War
>616 (Civil War)

I will grant that he's not a very good character by himself in the comics, he needs another Superhero as a foil.
>>
I only like 80's iron man really.

I'm iffy on all these armors that can do shit like materialize around him or turn liquid or be stored in his bone marrow or whatever. I know Tony's all about going for futuristic hypertechnology and stuff, but it loses a lot of that Iron Man charm if the armor is not physically assembled out of solid pieces.
Hell, I remember when he used to carry the armor around in a goddamn briefcase. The suitcase armor scene in the second movie was a cool nod to that.

I fucking love Phil Saunder's suits, but I HATE the black/gold color scheme. Does anyone here have photoshop skills? Any chance they could take OPs pic and recolor it in the standard Iron Man colors?
>>

Stark should have kept the bleeding edge cyberpath sand nanotech armor that's in his bones stuff.

Sets him apart and makes him powerful.

His real ironman suits being all HOLY SHIT
IT'S ON NOW tier stuff with a wide variety of different utilitarian suits to wear for different occasions and remote call to him or control with robot mind powers is awesome.

That and giving him the ability to build stuff out of different stuff in different types of caves and different boxes of different kinds of scraps on different planets dimensions and time periods.

Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. I love watching Tony being hyper-competent in his own ongoing once in awhile.

199999. I'm a sucker for RDJ and 616 Tony can be too much of a cunt sometimes out of nowhere because of so many different writers. At least RDJ's Stark is consistently written.

I can confirm OPs pic is more of a brownish black than anything resembling red.

IM3's production was around the time the Black armor (later called Model 42, I shit you not) was a thing in the comics.

>favorite suit?

From the comics? Extremis.

From the movies? I know I'm probably in a minority, but I actually really like the 42. The 43 looks pretty good, too.

>favorite arc?

Either Extremis or pretty much all of Fraction's run. Pretty much anything that forces him to suck up his pride and be less of a selfish, egotistical cuntbag to everyone he knows.

>favorite Tony?

MCU Tony. All the eccentricities without as much dickish behavior.

He started being a cunt/ dick thanks to the MCU though, he wasnt actually like that before Civil War.

I could never bring myself to like that particular design, either 42 or 43.

Most Iron Man armors, or at least most well designed ones, have some kind of design philosophy that draws the eye to the center of the suit (the reactor.) 42 and 43 are just a mess of blockyness that does nothing in that regard, and the suit just comes off as sloppy, which works for the idea of a "proof-of-concept prototype" I suppose, but 43 is supposed to be a combat-ready armor. Using the same design that could barely hold itself together earlier for the combat ready model doesn't bode quite as well for the idea they were going for, at least from an aesthetic sense.

I dunno, I get the idea that they should have went with a different armor from the Iron Man 3 artbook for Mark 43, so that the transition between 43 and 45 looks more apparent. The "light armor" probably would have worked; http://i.imgur.com/O1dSKqh.jpg

Civil War came out before the MCU, and Tony's definitely been a dick at times before that (not nearly as much as he was in Civil War, though.)

If anything, RDJ saved Tony Stark from becoming a hated character in the 616.
>>
Mark IV forever. Far and away my favorite armor design, aesthetically speaking.

>>
>>12398656
>he wasnt actually like that before Civil War.
No, he was in fact worse. He was a MASSIVE cunt and dickbag and was no fun whatsoever.

He only became an entertaining one after the far more sane and fun version was created in the ultimate universe. The one that RDJ is basically portraying in the films.
>>
>>12400404

Such a waste of an amazing design. The Silver Centurion is one of Iron Man's most important and timeless looks, but it was reduced to just another throwaway in a big fight scene too dark and chaotic to make anything out.
>>
>>12401922
>The Silver Centurion is one of Iron Man's most important and timeless looks,

Just because you grew up during the 70's doesn't mean that it never ended.

The silver centurion was kinda lame looking, has no particular great power, great feats, or any great stories attached too it.
It's just another suit.
One of those suits that ironman artists will draw in the background as a nod to his other suits. It wll be between the deep space suit and underwater suit and just below the she-hulk buster.

Extremis is cool power wise but it didn't look as cool as I thought it should have. That black almost symbiotish one he wore recently was really damn cool. The new white one doesn't look as cool though. Too Apple looking. And any incarnation of War Machine is badass as fuck.

i thought there was a iron man armor in age of m that looked neat. other than that theyre all pretty cool i guess. i dont read comics much so i couldnt name my fav iron man story arc. the movie tony is pretty cool i felt.

The Five Nightmares is an amazing story, I think it's really underrated compared to the "classic" Iron Man stories to which there are extremely few of in my opinion. Tony lacks compelling villains, his best villains seem to be other businessmen, people who match him in terms of globe spanning wealth and influence.

My only regret about The Five Nightmares is that it looks like it's gonna make Fraction's run on Iron Man the best in decades, and then the whole thing is shot to shit by the fucking Secret Invasion, and the next 12 or so issues of Iron Man is about him losing the ability to be Iron Man, and going into the center of the mind. They wasted so many issues on getting back to a status quo, this is why I hate Marvel's crossover events, this garbage keeps happening.

>>12403538
Silver Centurion was pretty neat, but it began the trend of Tony only using a suit for roughly 2 years, then they'd have some story to replace it. After Armor Wars it was replaced with the Neo-Classic "Thermos" armor, which was then replaced again a couple of years later, again and again, until we hit the 90's and the artists started becoming so off-model that it became impossible to track. They've at least returned to having some kinda semblance and uniqueness to each suit now though.

>Favorite suit
I hate to just pick one, but the old Telepresence suit is definitely on my top 3, followed by the original Ultimate suit and the new Mark 45 (ranking may lower depending on how well it does in AoU). If we're allowed to include War Machine armors, the Initiative version is favorite, bar non.

>Favorite Story Arc?
I feel terrible for saying this, but World's Most Wanted. It's a totally despicable story in context, one giant excuse to literally erase his post-Civil War characterization and pull him from the brink of unredeemability (Seriously, at the time it was either this or kill him off. And with his new-found marketability thanks to the movies, that wasn't an option). But it was a surprisingly fun ride, sort of a twisted love letter to everything wrong with Stark before asking you (and in-story, his friends) to stay invested in him.

Also, there's this mini-arc from the 70s where a rogue LMD tries to take over Stark's life that has a special place in my heart, being one of the first Iron Man stories I ever read.

>Favorite Tony?
Nostalgia talking, but the one from the 90s cartoon, preferably second season. It's a near-perfect distillation of the character, doubly surprising since it does so without the alcoholism aspect.

The 2nd season of the old cartoon is really underrated. Compared to the other Marvel animated shows of the time, it managed to be clever and accurate to the comics, and of course it had one of the best cartoon intros ever.

1st season is kind of... eh, it feels like it falls very flat, and they really wanted to sell a lot of toys, so they gave Tony the ability to spontaneously change armor, made the faceplate design more "friendly", and of course included Force Works as the "Armor Team" to sell toys off those guys too.

And who can forget that CG transformation, because we gotta have some of that, even though it looks like shit.

It's "space armor." I guess it was supposed to look more reinforced than his normal suits, but it just ends up looking silly.

He barely even wore it, anyway. Tony was a "member" of the GotG for maybe three issues. He was only there to promote it by putting an A-lister on the team. I'm pretty sure they had no plans to keep him there.

It was the 90s by the time the Neo-Classic got replaced with War Machine.

Otherwise, the problem in the mid to late 90s is as much problems with the storylines in general, what with the shitstorm that led to teen Tony, then Heroes Reborn, then "Oh let's ignore all that stuff before HR" and then we get shit like Tony trying to be Clark Kent, etc.

It was a damned mess.

The chest is awful. The reactor light isn't the problem, it's how bulbous and bulky the whole upper torso looks compared to the rest of the suit. I'm also not a fan of all the silver.

No no no. Close, but no. Mark IV is the most beautiful and perfect. I miss it so.

BTW, I was not surprised the MkVI was used in Avengers, but I was surprised it wasn't repainted so as to look fully complete.
