I watched all 12 episodes yesterday at 1.6x speed because I knew after the second episode that it would be a challenge to suffer this at normal speed. I had finished 0083 the night before and while that had a completely retarded story full of stupid shit, it at least had enough artistic merit for me to consider it decent. 08th MS Team on the other hand has a shit story and looks TV-quality most of the time. It has fugly characters designs too, though this was standard for the 90s. Most characters look like they belong in a rock band, not just the songwriter guy.
08th MS Team is the most generic anime I have ever seen. It is full of stupid unfunny cringeworthy shit. The biggest flaw of 08th MS Team is that it is too much like an anime. It has epic hot springs scenes where main character sees boobs XD, shit romance, tit-grabbing comic relief and randumb Cowboy Plebop loli - all things that retarded casuals love. I cannot comprehend how someone over the age of 14 could enjoy this.
I am completely baffled as to why this is so highly regarded even with normies. The only way someone could consider this one of the best entries in the series is if they have never seen another UC Gundam. People are always praising this for its realism but it is full of ridiculous plot armor and it is not anymore realistic than the other UC Gundam animes. If anything 08th MS Team is more cartoony than the rest of the series
I thought the plot of it was complete shit as well, and i even disliked the characters, but the animation was fine and i still wouldn't compare it to moeshit or erotic anime.
My main gripe is that there was no reason for the three feddie mechs to be Gundams. The plot would have been more enjoyable and interesting with custom GMs or something instead. There was literally no "Gundam-like feat" or "superhuman piloting" that tends to be the subtext whenever Gundams are shown.
All in all, i still hated the show. It's a waste of time when you have webms of the nice scenes.

What did you think the Ground Type was? They're basically Proto-GMs made with spare RX-78 parts. Remember, the original Gundam wasn't really superior to the GMs - that was almost entirely Amuro.

The Ground Gundam's are the federal stimulus first 'production' suits, using the term loosely even then. They're all made, literally, of leftover RX-78 parts from various stages of the program. They built like 30 of them and left some 78-1/2 parts over as spares for them.

I said almost every Gundam precisely because of shows like Turn A and G-Reco that are deliberately made to be different. Not a coincidence they also happen to be among the most controversial.
I like 08th MS Team but yeah there's no way to defend it.
I don't really mind the romance though, people always bring this up as one of the series' biggest flaws, but I don't see it. It's poorly written and not engaging but it's far from being the plot tumor bringing the whole thing down people make it out to be. The plot and characters would be as stupid without it.
A lot of my love for this probably comes from the Ground Type being my favorite RX-78 successor/variant, and the initial premise of a group of grunts in a jungle front. It also has one of my favorite openings in the entire franchise.

When someone says the 8th Team were grunts, I don't think we watched the same show. They're piloting the best MS on Earth at this moment. They are shown several times to have way more power output than anything else, and they tank absurdly high amounts of damage that would wreck a GM or Zaku instantly.
It's like saying a F-22 flight is composed of "grunts". Yes, they're soldiers piloting mass-produced units, but there's nothing that can stand up to them.

08th MS Team was Gundam Vietnam, and so the scenes that did that aspect best were the most entertaining by far. There was actually the feeling that people could've gotten fucked up by the enemy suits or even the Magella tanks which makes it a lot more interesting than the usual 'Gundam will win because Gundam' fodder.

I didn't enjoy it all that much, and is the cause of one of the biggest inconsistencies I can think of. How could there be so many spare parts from the RX-78 project to make 20 or so complete units from them, and why make the RX-79 series in the first place? Stopgap measures doesn't seem like something the Federation does, why bother making something specialized in ground combat when its pretty clear the decisive battles would be in space by that point in the war?
GMs are cooler than the abomination that is the RX-79 series.

I'm sure there were some new parts fabricated for the RX-78[G]. Remember that the Federation was working their butts off trying to develop new mobile suits, so of course there would be a lot of spare parts laying around from all the design phases. Keep in mind that this is a huge development project taking place at many Federation bases and not just on Side 7

Except it was implied when the series began that it took place just after Garma's death. The GM was JUST NOW getting developed and the feddies had to act fast to prepare their ground offensive to reclaim earth from Zeon. Because let's be honest, they weren't gonna get shit done with just tanks, jets and the White Base alone.

Actually shitty live story aside I quite like it.
I wish we got more episodes of Mecha Vietnam and wish we got more episodes about various missions and the team forming bonds with the locals.
If the show was just that It'd probably have been my favorite. You don't even need a huge epic final. Just soldier SOL

The art direction and general treatment of the mecha was some of the best in the entire genre IMO. It stands up as mech porn. Has one of the best fight scenes in any Gundam ever.
Also many of us were 14 when we watched it and end up recommending it to 14 year olds who watch it etc. etc. It's quite palatable when you're 14.

Sure there was. You forget that every Gundam show is just a glorified toy commercial meant to push plastic. Re-cycling old designs for a new show is would have just made the show a missed opportunity thus a waste of resources since there would be no incentive for people to spend money on a new kit or they'd just buy old stock kits.

You could argue the Luna Titanium alloy was a big advantage, maybe the learning computer since the GMs could only use the data collected by the Gundam, and didn't have learning computers of their own.
