It's not a "poor translation", corn is not maize outside of the new anglosphere.

>The word "corn" outside North America, Australia, and New Zealand refers to any cereal crop, its meaning understood to vary geographically to refer to the local ...in British English, "corn" can mean any cereal.

Because DFW uses the word 'scrotum-tightening' on page like 729 or something and you don't get the reference if you haven't read Ulysses

What I meant is that you shouldn't think that DFW's style is his very own product with no real influence, because reading Joyce, Pinecone and Oulipo shows that he was indeed influenced by quite some parties, even if in the end he was a superior writer when it comes to some things

Said Jack Gladney was the chairman of Hitler Studies on the back of the cover. I figured there'd be more Hitler. There was a fair share of Hitler, and some interesting remarks about nazism and their cultural legacy (part about Speer's built-in beautiful decay of nazi architecture was esp. great), but I was expecting more Hitler.

Hard to tell if you don't know about Burroughs already. It's more colourful than Naked Lunch. Contains much anal sex for no particular reason, as well as systematic descriptions of penises and their hues. It's very gay, is what I'm trying to say. Blends genres otherwise, with the occasional bit of (accidentally?) great prose amidst the confusion.

Also, the portrait in The Portrait is a 'satanic' one. Gogol's stories from Evenings on a Farm are pretty much stories about devils messing around with peasants and cossacks.

how in the fuck is this heavily influenced by 1984, other than the title?
how the fuck did murakami manage to get away with such a shitty, unresolved story, and unimpressive writing?

It is because it is a riddle, with a different answer for everyone, that will only present itself after many re-readings :^)
>>

I think the majority of /lit/ shits on Murakami. I've only read Kafka on the Shore, and I am not interested in reading anything else by him as I hear he's a one-trick pony. While I enjoyed the sense of mystery it managed to engender in me, when I read that Murakami literally stated this >>7599945 with regards to it, I started considering him a massive, irredeemable faggot.

You are not the regular kind of stupid are you?
I read it when I was 12. I expected gospel and biblical text, and I got one of the best experiences in my life.

No, I didn't know what I was getting into, I was a kid and I picked it up from the living room's bookshelf. Why don't you go sulk in your bed whilst holding a John Green book, huh buddy?
