Anarchism and communism are like
the same thing.
Like there's this idea that the state only serves to protect property but communism disavows that and recommends shared property among everyone, so if we have that, anarchism is the only solution since a state is no longer necessary.
Or something like that

I saw Pynchon at a grocery store in New York yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person and congratulated him all his great literary achievements, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He replied, “Let me be unambiguous. I prefer not to be photographed”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “Jesus God man" and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen bananas in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be paranoid and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the snickers and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent entropy,” and then turned around and winked at me. After she scanned each banana and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by saying "A SCREAMING COMES ACROSS THE SKY" really loudly.

>When, in the course of development, class distinctions have disappeared, and all production has been concentrated in the hands of a vast association of the whole nation, the public power will lose its political character. Political power, properly so called, is merely the organized power of one class for oppressing another. If the proletariat during its contest with the bourgeoisie is compelled, by the force of circumstances, to organize itself as a class; if, by means of a revolution, it makes itself the ruling class, and, as such, sweeps away by force the old conditions of production, then it will, along with these conditions, have swept away the conditions for the existence of class antagonisms and of classes generally, and will thereby have abolished its own supremacy as a class. In place of the old bourgeois society, with its classes and class antagonisms, we shall have an association in which the free development of each is the condition for the free development of all.

It's what they think off-hand and without filters. It boggles my mind how genuine people are on social media, when usually in person and on the phone and on forums there's a "let me put on my human suit first" thing going on, where people self-censor and put at least marginally more thought into what they say. Also there's no way to know how many of those are complaining about those things being prevalent or highly valued (the high use of "fuck" might suggest it's a lot), but then that still means they're thinking and talking about those things a lot.

I'm actually having problems with people, mostly females, saying to me that half of the time they don't know whether I'm genuinely enthusiastic about something or if I'm just humoring them or even mocking them. The worst thing is that often I don't even know myself.

Sarcasm is fine, people can detect it pretty easily and are used to it, but post-irony is the new fatal cosmic nihilism, it's not compatible with life

"Irony" is a cover for the fact that most twenty-somethings just don't really believe in anything. They move between different levels of dryness signalling different levels of affection and distaste for ideas which they wouldn't, in any case, commit to because they have no principles.

This could fruitfully be called post-PoMo because the PoMos thought that irony was going to be a kind of salvation from absurdity. e.g. from Bellow:

"That's the animal ridens in me, the laughing creature, forever rising up. What's so laughable, that a Jacqueline, for instance, as hard used as that by rough forces, will still refuse to live a disappointed life? Or is the laugh at nature—including eternity—that it thinks it can win over us and the power of hope? Nah, nah! I think. It never will. But that probably is the joke, on one of the other, and laughing is an enigma that includes both."

I'll assume you see what I mean. You can trace a similar vein in Eliot's Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. There's a warmth in the irony, a wisdom that includes humour. It is a full and satisfying philosophy which includes much beside irony; but it stresses the irony.

The millennial has found that a laugh isn't always merry. It needn't be a charitable laugh, or a hopeful laugh. Sometimes it's just a nasty laugh. The new ironist can laugh at himself, and at everyone else, and at everything, but not with warmth. His is a cold and skeptical laugh, often indistinguishable from a sneer.

The "new sincericist" is the name for the new prig who somewhat self-consciously asserts that he takes something seriously. I have nothing wrong with taking things seriously but he rather reminds me of the Christians who like to "testify". Still, I can admit that there is use for him. His whole purpose seems to be to unsettle the amused aesthete, and I like that.
>>
What we have now is pretty much the counterreaction to last century, which we spent drunk on ideology. The pendulum has swinged back as we've realized that ideologies don't have all the answers, and now passion for an idea and strong, sweeping oratory is viewed with distrust. On top of that, technology has changed the first world and the old values no longer suffice, but the new ones have not yet been properly invented, so the youth are afflicted by an epidemic of anomie.

The only thing that is immune to this effect is the absurd and irony. Because they require no attachment. Sincerity requires and attachment to something, but if you have no attachments, you cannot be sincere. And what possibly you could be attached to? You've been bored and drifting all your life, and you have nothing to fight against, nothing to define yourself with, either by "I am this", or "I am not this", because you avoid feeling deeply about anything. It's all ephemeral, subject to change, relative, meaningless cosmic dust, and this point of view transforms sincerity into absurdity.

That's right, to be sincere is to be absurd, and only absurdness and irony can entertain you anymore. Hence, your sincerity gains barbs and becomes just another tool for expressing your mild disdain towards everything, disdain for which you have no solutions. You have no idea what could be done better, nor do you care.

They were as democratic as Western Europe or the United States. Exactly as democratic.

>and that they were "communist" or "socialist" only in name?
Are we forgetting the periodic revolutions for actual communism? That has to come from somewhere.

This image is basically why 4chan is good, or at least the humor style of 4chan is good (if it's from SA or whatever)

The original comic had its time, and then ten thousand variants of this image have been created: most of them garbage, a smaller proportion of them were kinda funny for a second but not worth saving, an even smaller proportion were funny enough or inside joke-y enough to circulate for a while, and at the very top you have the ones good enough to stand on their own. The guy who created it is probably not some super genius, he just had a really good idea that struck him for an edit.

We're all monkeys on typewriters here, trying to make each other laugh. It's pretty cool. It harnesses camaraderie, competitive instincts, and altruism to create an open community of likeminded people based on comedy.
>>
>>7861906
4chan is actually an extended exercise in mutilating your social abilities.

Bad readings; misunderstanding of modernism.

it applies more to bellow than to eliot, who was ofc very nervous and skeptical. I meant only to say you can trace it back to some nervous first attempts in modernism. of course Eliot became an Anglo-Catholic and fell back a little more on old paradoxes and less on irony. but the young man imitating laforgue was arguably more influential on the PoMos

whether I have misread Bellow I am open to being told; but I'd like to hear a better reading if you have one.
