It's tragic because as we learn by the end of the book, Ishmael is actually a transwoman forced to remain in her male body by society. The sentence "call me Ishmael" initially seems like nothing at all, but upon second reading, one realizes that it's actually an incredibly tragic statement wherein we come to understand that Ishmael has been crushed, forced by society to assume a male identity completely, to the point that she introduces herself with her birth name, rather than her real, chosen name, Ishabella. It's called "Moby DICK" for a reason, guys. Namely, because the conflict between man and whale is actually totally symbolic, representing Ishabella's feelings of dysphoria towards her penis.
