The goal can be anything, it's all up to the dungeonmaster and he rarely discloses the endgame. Usually the dungeonmaster begins by introducing all the characters, which can be plot related if he chooses to or simply just a start to get everyone together.
It depends on the group, you're supposed to have a backstory for your character and a sense of what your character is and does. Since these vary its up to the DM to put em all together and make it work. Like for example the game could start out with everyone having been kidnapped by orcs and put into a gladiator arena and now how to escape together, with them all being grouped together as a result and then further bound by whatever plot the DM sets them up to.
DM's also tend to ask players what their characters goals are and make the destination for these places/goals to coincidence to group everyone together. Its really a social game so you can just discuss with the other players beforehand what the party should be like if you want it to already exist rather than form as you play.
And yeah you can kill other players, but every part has houserules, you can be an asshole and fuck others over but you should generally not try to downright kill the others. Like this one time I used my high charisma character to start a cult for my obscure god and eventually came to rule a really shitty town.
I will never forget my pride work in that town, I expanded the mines by letting dwarfs settle in them and just give me a share. I had a whopping 16 soldiers at my disposal, fear me mortals.
But tl;dr yeah you work as a team but if your group is cool with it you can be the douchebag of the party, expect consequences though.

go to your GP, ask to get referred to a clinic, preferably charing cross in london, then say you've been dealing with gender identity issues for forever, if you have any mental health issues like depression, say they possibly stem from that, that you've been self medicating for however much amount of time, cry a bit, you can get your referral sorted (a GP has to refer you to a clinic and can do that, worst they can do is send you to a psych who used to work at a gender clinic (there used to be more but health service cuts saw them cut), these psychs usually run their stuff out of local mental health services, you go in, tell your life story, they say 'well its very likely you're a transsexual' and refer you to a clinic. they will likely try and choose a clinic for you, its important you know you can choose what clinic you like. hopefully you can get a script out of your GP too. Also its best to see a women's health specialist (as they're used to prescribing HRT) or on the GIRES site there's info from the Endocrine Society (an international group of endocrinologists) on drug doses and some basic bloodwork info. bringing that to your doctor can help a bunch if they're new to prescribing tranny pills (and they will be)

I'm the anon who came out at 17 to his parents then searched for another answer. I joined a Christian cult instead. After the first therapy session I told my parents "just don't worry about it" and stayed in that online religion for 5 years. After the end of the world date got pushed back twice I gave up and fell even harder into depression.
I'm 25 now and seeing a new therapist now that I finally have a job with health insurance. I broke down in front of my GP last week at my first visit and told him what was going on in my life. He put me on anti-depressants and gave me a referral to a psychiatrist and an endocrinologist.
I can't consider myself a woman. I'm a failure of a man. I have deep, conservative beliefs and learned to hate everything about myself from my five years of brainwashing.
We're all broken but we get to decide what we want to do with the pieces.
