From a writers perspective they wanted to give the pairing some finality, to actually have them be a thing before the tragic end. I actually didn't mind how she died. I hate the idea of her dying as the result of losing a fight she was prepared for, one involving grounder weapons -- that would lessen her badassness.
I get why it bugs people that she died right after they had their adorable pillow talk scene, but I can't really say I would have wanted them to get together sooner either. If anything I would have wanted the build-up to be longer, but that wasn't an option. Personally I'm willing to put up with the two scenes being jammed into the same episode for the sake of slow burn.
So I'm fucking sad that she died, and I feel for all the kids who were torn up by it, but I'm not dissatisfied with it from a critical standpoint.

I'm familiar with a lot of "SJW" rhetoric and the only areas where I've seen the kind of talk you're discussing is when it relates to trans topics, which is its own kettle of fish. That shit is going through constant upheaval for a variety reasons. With that said, as far as cis gender issues go, the overall argument is that certain activities do NOT define gender.
