Its weird. I live in london, one of the most gay friendly places on the planet, have a hugely liberal social circle, and I still feel really anxious about people finding out I'm gay. I have spent some time thinking about this, and these are my conclusions.
1) Most importantly, I don't want people to think I am an attentionseeker. I have read the sentiment that "gays should stop rubbing it in our faces" hundreds of times on the internet, and I guess its sunken it. My number one fear is people thinking I would only be coming out for attention.
2) At the moment I can blame my lack of a boyfriend on being mostly closeted. What if I come out and then still can't get a boyfriend? I would have no excuse to hide behind.
3) What if being gay is "just a phase" and I change my mind in a few years? Everybody would laugh at me behind my back.
4) I am not comfortable talking about sexual stuff of any kind, least of all my own sexual preferences. It embarasses me.

I feel like of the "coming out to seek attention" attitude is more based around people who make being gay their entire lifestyle- people who only have gay friends, only go to gay bars, things like that. It may just be something I don't understand because I'm not gay myself (I'd say I'm about 90% straight, if I liked someone enough I wouldn't be against it but it's never happened). I think a lot of others who get frustrated at it also don't understand, more than being intentionally hostile.
