My friends in high school probably wouldn't have given me too much shit, they joked that I basically acted like an awkward little girl anyways, but I was too much of a coward to say that yes actually I want to be a girl. I went to a very socially liberal college where there were plenty of trans people that I could have connected with, but again I was too much of a coward. The only defense I have is that my phobias of opening up and committing to things were stronger than the dysphoria I felt, which again just makes me feel like a piece of shit because if what I felt were real wouldn't the dysphoria have overruled those fears? Younger transitioners who despise people like me who didn't have what it takes to get started at a reasonable age in spite of having all possible opportunities, and even those that started later because of adverse situations, I don't think they are wrong for feeling sickened by people like me.

I could have started transitioning earlier this year, but I turned to a creationist and a tumblrfag for help, both of whom said I could be accepted as I was. My friends in high school bullied me when I started tucking with tight boxer-briefs, but I stuck with them because I thought they could teach me to be masculine. They did, but I got to a point where I was tired of it. I've mentioned my ritalin addiction before, which I consider weak. I knew something was wrong, but ultimately, I just started taking enough meds to stop feeling anything instead of trying to cope with reality. I think I'm lucky to be alive, but if I had spoken up about the fact that I dreamed of having sex as a girl, maybe I would have been put on the right path. Maybe.
A good friend and DJ told me that she was glad that she went to a conservative college for a little while, because it sparked something in her. She dropped out, but the sheer agony she felt was enough to push her to transition.
So I don't despise you. People just have to go through a certain amount of pain in order to realize something's wrong. It's not your fault that you were comforted, instead of encouraged or discouraged. You're not a coward, you just hate pain. We all do, because we're human.
