The biggest thing is learning to count calories. Find out what your maintenance intake is, and then reduce the number of calories a day to meet your weight loss goal. There are plenty of calorie calculators out there, all it takes is a google search.

Eat less high-carbohydrate foods, eat foods high in protein, add in foods with unsaturated fats--avoid saturated fats and sugar like the plague.
