Has anyone in /arg/ ever built a thumper? .458 SOCOM, .50 Beowulf, etc.? I think I'm going to build up a precision/hunting AR lower, and build it around the idea of just swapping out uppers for whatever caliber I'm wanting. I figure 5.56 can handle coyotes, gophers and dindus, and .458 SOCOM can handle deer and hog. Or would .300 BLK be a smarter choice for a hog gun?

The thing is, my fucking dad wanted to pay for it. When I looked at the start of March, it was available. He insists on asking some stupid friends about it first to make sure I'm making a good choice, and sure enough, it goes out of stock. Their ETA said late April, at the start of March. Then it got bumped up to late April/May. At the end of May, they removed it, and it took until 2 days ago when we checked the website by chance (no email notification) and saw it in stock. ADM still didn't have it so we bought their mount from PA and paid about $100 extra. Good mount, though.

I had a .450 bushmaster upper for a while.
I like the round pretty well, 99% of the capability of a .458 but with much MUCH more common reloading components (.452" pistol bullets, I used .454cas/.460 XTP-Mags, straight-wall cases last for-fucking-ever if you don't lose them in the weeds, brass is cheaper). It also generally gets 2-3 extra rounds in a mag over .458. Pretty much the only 2 reasons I got rid of it were:
>no real option for subsonics, since you use pistol bullets and they don't have near the variety of weights
You could size down .458 bullets, but at that point it's generally advisable to just get a .458 if you shoot much suppressed subsonic
>literally nobody makes a reliable mag for it
It's not quite fat enough to work in unmodified 5.56 mags and the bushmaster OEM ones SUCK DICK. I ended up shimming the sides of a Pmag and shaving the follower, got it ~99% reliable but it was a lot of work.

Today I got a budget mil-dot optic - I'm not sure if it'll hold up, but it has a lifetime warranty so I'm not too scared about it breaking. It was a pain to fiddle with the shitty mounts that came with this thing - I might swap them out for something I like better - but the actual optic in and of itself seems decent out of the box. I'll find out for sure when I zero it and empty a few mags.
