Lots of sports gear would be good. Football or hockey helmet, football shoulder pads, knee and elbow pads, shin guards.
Thick enough plain UHMWPE plate would be good for handguns. HDPE is a decent backup, it's what cutting boards are usually made from. I'd ghetto together a plate carrier from shirts or tape or something and use cutting boards for plate

I actually made this for a Post-Apocalyptic cosplay. Made it out of the outer plastic of football shoulder pads, a license plate, a leather belt, and screws. Problem was I kept bumping into people, it jutted out really far.
If you want to make apocalyptic armor, just go to a Swap-Meet. Plenty of old rusty car shit to use.

I wouldn't have thought that was a very good idea. Given how easy it is to get a puncture in your average car tyre it's probably not going to offer any balistic protection whatsoever, and not a lot from sharp objects. The rigidity is about right to offer some protection against blunt objects, and it would spread some of the energy out over a larger area - however both these guys have got threaded studs in their armour. Get hit on one of those and rather than dampening the blow it'll focus all of the force on to a point the same size as the nut.

Yo OP. Dont forget about floor tile ballistic plates, woven seatbelts are real hard to stab/slash, ABS can be cut with cheap wood tools a thermal molded in an oven and for esthetics everything can be coated in cloth with spray glue (like medieval times).

From what I've read on /k/, in the event of some large disaster (SHTF)
The lands will be dwelled by 15 year old neck beards with gas masks, SKSs and mosin nagants.
A couple weeks into the "post-apocalyptic" and you'll regularly stumble across the bloated bodies of these former /k/ommandos.
They will be covered head to toe with various tactical knives, bayonets meant for other guns, and other combat-related equipment with little to none of it being useful on your search for water and antibiotics.

It's very dense semi-flexible foam, yes.
You can stab right through it, but it offers very good protection from blunt impacts.
Far better than motorcycle/motorcross padding which mainly offers protection against abrasion.

The idiocy of most rioters and the like will always fill me with a bitter warmth and give an irony-induced smirk.
Chainmail under kevlar isn't too horrible, a plate carrier is a different story though since it concentrates weight and creates pressure points.
You can make a passable great helm by taking a section of 6 or 8" steel pipe, cutting through one side of it, using a vice to spread the cut wider till it will fit over your head, weld a cap onto the top and a grille onto the face opening, pad the fuck out of it, be The Black Knight.
If you wanted to go full-SCA you can cut up a plastic 55-gallon drum and make a coat of plates, spalders, arm guards, shin guards, whatever your little heart desires. Glue stout material to it, paint it and lash it all together with paracord. Offers good protection against blunt impact and some protection against knives.
Aluminum road signs can be repurposed as riot shields, good for blocking thrown objects, smoke grenade canisters, rubber projectiles, that sorta thing. Totally worth not taking a brick upside the head, takes a fair amount of training and practice not to be a liability in a fight though.
You can nigger-rig ballistic plates out of fiberglass sheeting and ceramic tiles or a couple thick books and some duct tape.
Armor is for people that have the chance to receive medical care immediately after battle.
If you have no dedicated medical support. You are better off not wearing armor.

As a full suit it would be heavy as fuck, but in bits and pieces for where you would expect to take a blow like you shoulders, back or have it on you forearms to block that would be most practical. Mix it with something like hockey pads or the horse armor that would be a very practical combination. All of this assuming everyone has gone back to sticks and stones or you are trying to riot.

As someone who owns a lot of high quality motorcycle gear, I would say no to this. I literally trust my life to my gear, but it wouldn't stop a blade much less a bullet. You would be better off in a shorts and t-shirt since at least you would be comfortable and able to move easily.
