I mean, you can use oil but it isn't going to break down any copper fouling. for best results:

run a few patches with hoppes
run a few dry
run a few hoppes/ copper brush
run a few dry

repeat until patches come out clean

>2oz EXTREMELY WRONG?. Please. I didn't know Nutnfancy was on /k/. I'll concede there are a couple lighter rails with absolutely nothing on them, but i'm not even remotely interested in spending 240-270 for absolutely no gain in functionality on this particular rifle. I'm not fretting about it.

>I'm not fretting about it.

That's not the same as being right you moron. You were objectively proven wrong. The only rails I could find that were heavier were the deprecated as fuck quad rails Daniel Defense hocks at the price ranges you listed above (ironic).

EVERY single one of those rails I posted are LIGHTER than the magpul rifle length MOE's (12 inches).

Some of them were LONGER than 12 inches and STILL lighter. A FAR cry from
>lighter than pretty much any rail of comparable length short of a carbon fiber tube

Do you all check headspace? Do I need all three gauges or should I just get NO GO? Do you have a brand to recommend? Why the hell are these things like $50?
>>
>>30245465
I'm pretty sure no one bothers to check head spacing
>>
>>30245465

Literally pointless for ARs unless you actually managed to get a barrel that didn't have the extension installed from the factory.
>>
Any reflex sights you goys, i mean guys, would recommend?
>>
>>30245465
i've got one
i never use it
>>
>>30245465
Unless you're doing the chamber yourself they're pretty pointless. Current machining practices for AR's are standardized and repeatable enough that factory barrels will mate correctly with everybody's bolt well enough to not matter.

Keep in mind you have 5 thou of range of "ideal" headspace (0.002-0.007) and nearly 10 thou of "acceptable" headspace (0.0005-0.010)
>>
>>30245495

If you got a complete upper WITHOUT BCG from Aero and literally found a BCG in the street any worries about headspace would be minimal.

Anything sold as a complete w/ BCG has been factory gauged with that specific bolt and there are *no* concerns about headspace.

thanks for the info

I guess if I see fucked up brass ejecting then I should evaluate the headspace.

I was warned about explosive gasses in the chamber if the headspace is off and that got my paranoia ringing.

My barrel is from BA and my BCG is Anderson MFG.
>>
>>30245527

I'm actually not trying to meme in any way, just trying to learn. Why do Eotechs suck?
>>
>>30245578
Any time they experience a significant temperature change in a short amount of time (+/- 40ish* F in under 8 hours) they can shift their zero as much as 8 MOA. Which is permanent. A lot of people claim "well in the civilian world this'll never happen" but that's literally going from an air-conditioned car to a sunny range everywhere in the continental United States from about May through September, or conversely going from a climate-controlled house to the range in the winter everywhere north of the Mason-Dixon line.

Their glass is comparatively fragile. Why they never bothered to use tempered glass when it's that large and that exposed I have no idea, but I've seen real Eotechs have their glass cracked by airsoft BB's. Meanwhile literally even the $60 PA basic microdot will take 12ga #7.5 trap loads to the glass point blank and not shatter (though generally they're not really usable afterwards), and the CompM2's and CompM4's have taken 7.62x39 rounds to the glass without breaking in Iraq and Afghanistan.

They're immensely expensive for what they are.

Their battery life ranges from abysmal (512, 552, 553 @ 350 hours of usable/500 to completely dead on the lowest visible) to bad (EXPS series @ 3200 hours of usable/4200 hours to completely dead on the lowest visible).

Any model predating the EXPS series would turn off under recoil because they couldn't figure out how to keep the batteries from slopping around in the battery compartment and losing contact. Many of these (552 and newer) are still in production.

Auto-shutoff feature that can't be overridden on any model.
>>
>>30245625
To give an idea of how bad the zero-shifting is, 8 MOA at 300 yards is 2 feet. Most things worth shooting aren't 2 feet wide.
>>
>>30245575
The most likely thing that'll happen with excess headspace is you'll get a case-head separation. Not dangerous to the user 99.999% of the time, but will ruin your range day as you'll then have to pound the case body out of the chamber with a tight-fitting cleaning rod.

Too little headspace (negative headspace) is more dangerous, as it could potentially cause an out-of-battery detonation. Those are dangerous.
>>
>>30245631
To further expound on this, here's a hypothetical scenario
>it's July and you wanna go blast shit for the 4th
>you take your Eotech to the range, and can't hit shit because unbeknownst to you, the rapid but relatively minor temperature change going from your 68-70* home to the 90+* and sunny range shifted the zero 8 MOA
>you spend an hour dicking with it, either back in your vehicle or in a comfy shaded area/air conditioned clubhouse (because you're surely not retarded enough to stand in the sun), it cools off somewhat and shifts about another 4 MOA
>still can't hit shit with it, but you're shooting it again and it's in the sun again. Yep, another ~4 MOA shift in a random direction
>give up and go home
>the optic cools off going from the hot range back to the A/C'd house and shifts *another* 8 MOA
While this may be unlikely, it's possible. This is not true for literally any other optic of any kind of fame or repute.
>>
>>30245682
It's too bad they are shit, I really like the way they look
>>
Okay I have two questions, since I finally picked up some greentips the other day:
1, how many of you prefer 855 greentips over standard 193 ball ammo as a general rule?
2, is there any practical use where I'd definitely want the extra penetration from 855? I assume they're a poor choice for plinking coyotes compared to 193.
>>
Has anyone else here installed their trigger guards by unconventional means?
I borrowed my friend's pin punch set but he only gave me roll-pin holders.
So I installed the thing using an old pin, a holder and allen keys. There's scuffing and shit around the pin hole but no ears snapped off and it's in there... All's well that ends well?
>>
>>30245911
Punches suck ass, as I learned when I broke a lower trying this. Follow the advice that i followed the second time and use channel-lock pliers with masking tape wrapped around the teeth. The pins go in far easier and you won't need to worry about breaking shit.
>>
>>30245915
>broke a lower

How the fuck did you do that
>>
>>30245911
>>30245915
I just did this and I recommend using electrical tape instead of masking tape. I scratched my shit a bit using masking tape because it was putting holes in the tape. I was using vise grips though.
>>
>>30245931
I've heard about people breaking the tabs where the trigger guard goes in because they were hitting too hard while installing the pin.

Just hit lightly and increase force a little until you find that sweet spot. You aren't forging steel here.
>>
Has anyone used burris optics before? I've never used one but I'm not seeing too many bad reviews around and it could save me a bit of money.
>>
>>30245943
I've generally just tapped roll pins in with my brass hammer until they go in snug

Except for that railed gas block.

Fuck that bitch
>>
>>30245952
I tried that method with my gas block roll pin. Fucking thing shot across the room never to be found and I had to go buy them locally for too much money. I'll be using my vise grips for that from now on.
>>
>>30245943
>>30245952
Yeah, most of those horror stories I hear are from people not supporting the ears those holes are drilled into. So long as the force has a medium to transfer to, and is touching the part it's fine to go firm on it.
But I will say these scratches are triggering my autism. It's urging me to build a new AR.

>>30245982
Could have been worse. At least my local place had them. I had a detent spring fly across my patio and i had to order one. I don't like waiting.
>>
>>30245969
It's suggested that you support that area when installing the trigger guard roll pin, but it can be done without support as long as you tap lightly and use lubricant. That goes for all roll pins. Just tap lightly.

>>30245995
The first time I tried to install the buffer tube catch, I unscrewed the buffer tube a little too much and that little bastard hit my forehead with enough force to break skin. That was my first lesson on wearing eye protection when installing parts. The little spring for the rear takedown pin was a bitch for me too for some reason. Luckily my beard caught it the few times it shot out.
>>
>>30246015
That's the spring that shot out on me. I swapped out for the front one. However, I just now tried to put it in and the ones I ordered don't fit. Apparently this set of 3 that are supposed to be the ones for the two takedown pins and the selector switch detent are all just the ones for the switch detent. That's the last time I order this shit from amazon. More fucking waiting
