1/7 or 1/9

I am mostly going to be shooting 55gr and occasionally 62gr m855/ss109

I am seeing varying opinions on twist rate on the internet from not mattering that much compared to ammo to being the most important thing about your gun.

basically.
>>
>>30105497
Best twist rate for 55 to 62gr stabilization?
The only reason the military went with 1/7 is to stabilize the tracers.
>>
>>30105466
1:8 is the most versatile (40gr flat-base varmint bullets to 77gr match bullets with good accuracy) but has the worst barrel selection.

1:9 will do 36gr-69gr and some 75gr bullets with good accuracy and will stabilize the 77gr bullets, but isn't really ideal for them. Usually only found in cheap barrels though.

1:7 has the best barrel selection ("muh milspec") but is actually a little too fast for most bullets. If you intend to shoot M856 tracers or 62gr+ exclusively it's a good choice, but will stabilize 50gr flat-base bullets/52gr boattail bullets on up to anything short enough to fit in a mag. Barrels run the gamut on quality and are extremely widely available at all price points (again, muh milspec).

>>30105497
Ideal twist rate for AR-appropriate plinking, hunting/fighting, and match bullets and will still do most varmint bullets well enough. Usually only found in mid-high to high end barrels, very few cheapshit or junk barrels available in it.
>>
>>30105508
>going to be shooting 55-62
>use the twist optimized for 62-77
>source MS paint

>>30105515
My understanding was that it's because they don't shoot 55gr anymore

>Best twist rate for 55 to 62gr stabilization?
Do you have some evidence?

>>30105516
So if I want a good barrel I have to select the meh tier twistrate for the ammunition I will be using?
>>
>>30105497
>>30105508
>>30105515
>>30105516
Reminder that overstabilization is a massive meme and barrel manufacturers are trying to jew you.

1/6 twist(yes it exists) still fails to "overastabilize" 55g rounds.

1/7 is the best twist rate
>>
>>30105553
I just went to the Port Charlotte gun show and some guy in a fedora told me that 1/7 are bad at stabilizing 55gr and that the best twist rate is 1/9 for general purposes.

Will 1/7 stabilize 55gr-62 gr as well as 1/9?
>>
>>30105576
my 1/7 shoots 55g really well
>>
>>30105576
1/7 will stabilize anything you could conceivably fire out of an AR in 5.56 chambering.

Even 80+ grain spotting rounds
>>
>>30105576
No. 1/7 generally likes heavy bullets
>>
>>30105588
This is just simply incorrect though, it can accept heavy bullets but it doesn't "like" them more so than 55g rounds.

Most heavy rounds are "match" rated and are more consistent than M193/M855, leading to that misconception.
>>
>>30105551
Nah. The M856 tracer is retardedly long for its weight (as well as having a shit SD since it's not actually lead-cored) and doesn't stabilize well in slower twists. 1:8 will stabilize it but accuracy is dogshit, and 1:9 won't stabilize it. Since 1:7 does stabilize both it and M855 (and mk318 and mk262, though those are newer) with good accuracy it was a good fit for .mil use.

Also, no. There's plenty of good barrels available in 1:8, it's just that not every little tactical store ever has their own store-brand barrel in it. DD, Faxon, Ballistic Advantage/Aero, Black Hole Weaponry, Larue, Noveske, and a few others make barrels in it.

>>30105587
Wont stabilize my 40gr Varmageddons or 36gr Varmint Grenades, so fuck you.
>>
>>30105585
>>30105587
>>30105588
Also how big of a difference is this going to make?

I really just want to be able to shoot chest sized targets out to 300 yards with 55-62gr and want a good quality barrel with a long service life.

More precise shooting would be fun but I could build a different upper for competition or precision shooting.
>>
>>30105610
Here's the kicker: Unless you're trying to shoot something wildly inappropriate (90gr VLD's single-loaded, or 32gr gopher grenades), it makes very very little difference to anybody other than competition benchrest shooters.

>>30105553
Agreed that it is vastly overblown, but an "overstabilized" bullet hurts its BC. Depending on how overstabilized, it can hurt it rather massively. Rarely effects actual accuracy though.
>>
>>30105608
Its not that it isn't stabilizing them, its that those are horribly unstable rounds in flight because of their weight and speed.

Next time you shoot them go check if they are keyholing, if they aren't then its just the rounds being inconsistent and not liking your barrel.
>>
>>30105628
They keyhole. Trust me, I shoot a lot of them through an actual varmint AR (1:12 twist) and they're quite accurate. They're also handloads. I know what I'm doing.
>>
>>30105638
Alright well I'd like to amend what I previously stated, 1/7 is good for 55g and up.
>>
>>30105661
But is it better for 55-62 than 1/9?

I don't have any intentions of shooting anything heavier than 62gr or lighter than 55gr through a 5.56 upper

http://www.groundzeroprecision.com/collections/free-float-handguards/products/15-super-ultra-slim-keymod-ar-15-free-float-rail?variant=5427148737
>>
>>30105674
Well if you're really seriously never ever going to shoot anything heavier than 62 grain, then 1/9 would work just as well as 1/8 or 1/7.

You'd just be setting a hard cap on what you could accurately shoot, which eventually might bite you in the ass.
>>
Do you get more stabilization from a longer barrel of the same twist?
>>
>>30105676
Do you like skinny or fat rails?
>>
>>30105707
Alright, so realistically how big of a difference would I see using the same ammunition through a 19/ or a 1/7?

If it's negligible I would just go for the 1/7 and preserve the capability to shoot heavier things if the need arose.

If it's a considerable difference why should I handicap myself on the ammo I will be shooting the most?
>>
>>30105684
I don't like the way your rifle looks im sorry
>>
>>30105732
Indirectly, yes. Up to a point.

Faster bullets need less stabilization, so a 10" barrel will stabilize an M193 clone load less than a 20" barrel.

>>30105742
Very minor. Not quite what I'd consider negligible, but certainly nothing to seriously worry about.
>>
>>30105742
How far are you going to be shooting?

Is this an SPR that you're taking out to 600 yards or a red got rifle that you're most likely never going to shoot past 200 yards with?

As in, they'll both work just fine.

I have 4 different twist rates in AR's--1:12, 1:9, 1:8, and 1:7. The only ammo I can't shoot sub-5" groups at 300 yards with are my two very light varmint bullets (40gr Varmageddon FB non-tipped and 36gr Varmint Grenade FB non-tipped), and only through the 1:7, and my 77gr SMK/mk262 clones through the 1:12. I've shot 68gr "heavy match" Black Hills reman through the 1:12 with acceptable accuracy even.

By tilting the rifle you bring the red dot into standard vertical over bore alignment for offset shot holds at close range and the cheek weld remains the same. Good benefits for a shooter already accustomed to the rifle and looking to simply add a red dot in addition to a magnified optic.

when does 5.56 start to shit the bed and lose too much energy to kill people?

About 500 meters is the max you are going to get in terms of combat effectiveness.

I Talked to Spuhr last week
The SP-3602 and SP-3616, SP-3016
Will come out with a QD version but it will cost ~430$ if you want to wait.

They won't make a SP-3601 30 mm QD so im ordering the normal SP-3601 30 mm 20moa in a few months to get my FNAR setup

probably getting a Brügger & Thomet muzzle break for it aswell and later the suppressor.

The unit of people I am with for wacky bats chose some dude who just came back to the unit after he left for a few years to do an NCO type position job in leading people. After they knew that I want to do it, and I'm qualified, and that I would be good at it. I don't know why, but now I'm just going to resent all of them even though they are my friends. We were doing drills earlier in marching people around the field, and he had a fucking cheat sheet for the commands in his hand, and still couldn't fucking do them right. I know them all by memory and could have shit on him. They chose him purely because he's their fucking buddy and he's been around a little longer than me. I'm leaving the unit at the end of this year most likely, because move up or move out.

Still so fucking pissed. I'm not even mad at the guy he chose, I'm mad at the people who chose him. One even gave me the "You have to prove you're dedicated to helping the unit" and shit schpeel, and I've been around doing everything I can for 3 years now, and this fuckstain gets to come back and do cool shit.

Thank god the real Army doesn't give me reasons to resent people :^)

The Type 2s are much better if you are looking for something grippy. If you just want a little bit of accent rubber the Type 1s are fine, and help keep the heat off of your hands a fair amount for their size.

Ring mount then gives me the choice to turn it how I want.
