Because I live in Cuckanada, handguns are limited to ten rounds, semi auto rifles are limited to five rounds, but there's no limit on 22LR. So I can get a 22 semi auto rifle and slap a 75 round magazine in it.
It's quite possible I'd rather have 75 rounds of 22LR that I can mag dump into someone than 5 rounds of 5.56 or 7.62 or .303 or whatever.
Of course, a handgun might still be better, or a shotgun.

.22 lr is not to be underestimated in a carbine it can provide sufficient penetration while the terminal effects may not be impressive it can be more then made up for by the cartridges minimal recoil and ablity to rapidly put additional rounds on target during most home invasions the intruder is not wearing body armor so armor penatraion is not a realistic concern if your target is wearing armor they are most likely military or police in which case you have larger worries then what bullet you are chosing some of these might be . Why are the feds after me. Why did I make so many poor choices, what is my religion and what will I say to my deity after the feds perforate my skull with multiple bullets.

continuing this post also an important consideration also is what are the local restrictions on fire arms, some areas do not allow for former military cartridges to be used by civilians ex no 5.56 or luger 9m dumb but hey its the law, other restrictions might make other guns less practical ex California requiring bullet button ny banning short barrels on rifles which impacts cqc capability . In my opinion if you can get a 20 round 22lr mag or larger that should be adequate for most home defense, other good selectins are .410, 22 gauge shot gun, 12 gauge shotgun, 9mm .38, .45 pretty much every thing that maxes out rang at around 100-300 yards and has less then 1500 foot pounds of energy out the muzzle to reduce recoil forces.

also upon further pondering I have also thought that another good qualifier for a home defense round is something that would not cause night blindness due to muzzle flash which is very important for night time engagements, another important thing is that it is not too loud, if the round deffens you after the first shot in a small enclosed environment that could be a significant impediment to further combat you might not hear other assailants who are in the room, its not like when some one breaks in your going to say oh let me put on my hearing protection and nifty shooting glasses
