Not worth it. A shitty 3x scope is not worth possibly becoming a felony. Prison is horrible.

Considering getting the RPR in 6.5 creedmoor as my first foray into precision shooting.

Two questions. Is it worth getting 6.5 creedmoor over .308? I've heard alot of talk either way but I've already done alot of .308 hand loading.

Second question, is the RPR itself worth it? Everything I've read suggests it's an excellent budget precision rifle considering all the features you get, but I don't know many other platforms to look at as alternatives to compare against
>>
>>29818634
If you hand load, yes 6.5 creed is great, but as you already have the die , no shame in the 308 game.

as to the rpr. If you looking for an out of the box pretty good rifle , do it. Barrel life has been reported to be short. ( had to make sacrifices to make the price point)

Personally Howa 1500 threaded action or sAvage action, and chassis.

OR savage 12 LRP for the same price range as the RPR with better barrel.
>>
>>29818634

even with a 175 gr bullet, 308 is pushing every envelope at 1k yds.

If you really want to be shooting at that range specifically, I'd get the more dedicated 6.5cm

If you want to do a lot of plinking at closer ranges, like 800 yds or less, then 308 might be more cost effective.
>>
>>29818685
>>29818693
Cool, thanks for the replies.

Also, is building my own rifle a more cost effective way of getting a nice long range platform? Before looking into the RPR, I looked into building my own rifle. I didn't really know what to look for though, so I have no idea if I could reasonably expect to get a nicer rifle than an off the shelf one at a similar price point. To add to that, I don't mind the idea of a project rifle at all
>>
>>29818862
If you caan find a donor action savage (top release) and dont mond investing in some tools you could build something nice
In rpr price range. Otherwise its hard to beat.
>>
>>29818862
here is my build.

Howa 6.5 creedmoor barrelled action from Brownells $435 shipped

MPA Lite Chassis for $699

scope base $54

Ring $60

All told $1248 with transfer.

scope is SWFA 3-15, and i am using an atlas bipod i already have.

RPR can not be found near me for less than MSRP , and the 6.5 is MSRP+

Sounds like a really nice setup.

I had a 20" Howa 1500 Targetmaster in 308 WIN that I dropped in a Bell & Carlson stock, and it shot amazing.
>>
>>29819126
That was the way i was thinking of going,

All told , with a B&C medalist with adjustable LOP and riser it would have been about $ about $1000.

If you go with the non adjustable B&C medalist stock, you can build a kick ass howa 1500 for $700.
>>
>>29818862
Yes you can.

depends on how much work you want to do.

if you fine a Used savage action at a pawn shop or online for a good price buy is, then buy a drop in savage replacement barrel from any number of good barrel companies.

Toss it into the stock/chassis of your choice.

Another option is to buy a factory barreled action and go from there.

Measure chamber depth to rifling and hand load to chamber length, Helped my accuracy improve quite a lot. Most factory loaded ammunition is shorter including "match" grade ammo to fit a wide variety of guns.

Calipers, precision (.1gr at least) scale, single stage press kit, calibers, tumbler or ultrasonic cleaner.
That's basically what you need to get started, many good kits to choose from. Personally I got an RCBS kit 12 years ago & ive been loading ever since, graduated to a progressive press (LNL) last year.

Damn are you guys me? I found a beater Howa 1500 chambered in 30.06 from Turners for like 200.

Had it rebarreled with an ER Shaw Barrel and a Manner's Composite Tactical Stock from StockyStocks. Threw in a timney trigger and it's an amazing rifle. Heavy as a pig no doubt about it, but good lord is it a blast to shoot.
>>

Just recently acquired a CZ452 with what appears to be some dinky 4 or 6X fixed power scope. Seems to work so far, will be taking it out shootin' this weekend hopefully.

How far out can I reliably hit something with, say, CCI or Winchester Bushman rounds?
>>
>>29821770
As stated. Torque wrench for rifle. To make sure everything is snug to spec.

For reloading as others have stated. The only tools you need out side of what would come with an rcbs or hornady kit ( hornady has a new press kit for precision shooting) are calipers ( igaging is what i recommend. Unless you have mitutoyo calipers)
I would also recomend a hornady OAL tool. You screw a special case to it. Add a bullet , then put it into your action. It allows for very accurate measurement of your freebore so you can easily load the ammunition to the correct length.

Cheers, any tips on shooting techniques? Plan to help a few buddies out in about 2 month's time with some pest control (mostly roos), using one of their "well worn" .223's or .308's.

Not the greatest shooter, only shot a few times. .22's feel fine to control, but anything bigger feels like I'm just throwing lead downrange and not really aiming it even though I'm controlling my breath, resting on the bench and only squeezing the trigger.
>>
>>29823392
Remember BRASS (Breath, Relax, Aim, Shoot)
Find a comfortable position where you can hold a rifle still and consistently hit in the relative same area. YouTube shooting techniques and watch how they hold their rifles. The biggest thing is not flinching, since after you pull the trigger you have to hold the rifle still until the bullet leaves the barrel
>>
The hardest thing about shooting and shooting well is being consistant. Work on setting up the shot the exact same way each time.

Same grip , stance, same cheek.weld, anme sight picture, same trigger press.
>>
>>29821822

Howa is the best kept secret in budget precision. Out of the box they have a machined recoil lug, pinned barrel, and the barrel is cold hammer forged.

And they've got a damned decent aftermarket to boot.
