Define battle rifle.

If you can't, then I will continue to consider the Garand a battle rifle.

AG42b, MAS-49, Garand, FN49 are all semi auto infantry-rifles in a full power cartridge.

I still think the gun doesn't justify the price, but scars are super comfortable compared to other battle rifles IMO and I think buy once cry once is the correct way to buy guns. I just find them a bit ugly, that's all.
At least my mas 49/56 is well above average when it comes to comfort and not being overly bulky or heavy for a 308 semi auto. But I need to hold a m14 socom(I think, the shorter barreled one) again one of these days to see what my actual #2 is when it comes to comfortable feeling battle rifles. The PTR isn't too bad to me either, otherwise I'm not much of a fan of how pistol gripped battle rifles feel.
>>29344419
I need to get me one of those too. I went looking the other day but only found a cetme to hold. And this cetme was a real piece of mis-fitted junk, even compared to other century cetme rifles I've found in the past.

It is a heavy rifle but I'm not a manlet so it's not too bad. Trigger is heavy and mushy but you get used to it. I haven't shot steel case out if it but ptr says it's fine.
>>
>>29345658
The socom has been plagued by issues. The truncated gas action is terrible.
Not sure how apparently so many rifles are awkward for you to fire. Pistol gripped rifles often have more controls easily reached while maintaining the grip. Might I suggest that it's a training issue.

The SCAR is rather high up the diminishing returns curve. Pare down your desires and it's easy enough to find a rifle at half the price to get there.
>>
>>29345972
Too bad it's got problems, I actually kindof liked those.
>Not sure how apparently so many rifles are awkward for you to fire
They're not bad, just not great feeling. It's not a big deal, it won't stop me from buying them. They'll just be there for the collection, less so for shooting.
>Pare down your desires and it's easy enough to find a rifle at half the price to get there.
Agreed bigtime, about 1/6th the price in my case.
>>
I looked at a Century CETME at Cabela's today, this gun was practically designed for my height and arm length. The weight is all near the grip and the charging handle is right above my supporting hand. It was like an extension of my body. I need one but not a Century one. PTR91 is the best bang for the buck, correct?

I really wish there was an FAL there so I could compare the two.

I also looked at an M74 sporter. The stock looks like it was made for a child.

>>
>>29347099
nope
>>
>>29347401
Nope. 7.62x39 is an intermediate cartridge.
Full size cartridges are generally characterized by casings of length exceeding 50mm and bullets that hover around a 7-8mm diameter.

These are just my personal observations, idk if there is truly any set-in-stone criteria for full-size rounds.

If I could get the one on the bottom, I would.

I just want a 30-06 BR that uses cheap magazines (which is only the BAR afaik).

I really hate the HCAR, but what about one of their 30 rounders in the sidefeeding Cobb upper? Man. I am dying here.
>>
>>29353848
>*which is only the BAR's MAGAZINES afaik
>>
>>29353848
Is there any reason a FAL could note be MADE (not remade) in 30-06? IIRC, it uses long stroke like the Garand and BAR, but is an overall better and more evolved design. Adujustable gas system standard means you could make better use of the
>WIDE
variations of 30-06 ammo.

Is there any reason why the DI system of 30-06 ARs (like Noreens) would be better or worse than a (long) piston system ala FAL?

Excuse me if I got some info wrong, I don't own any of those specific firearms. I do have a belt fed semi auto 308 I got in trade for a junky bassboat that I'll post pics of when I get home.
If /brg/ thinks that counts as a BR...
>>
>>29354002
Well, you'd have to stretch the receiver design a bit, I don't think it's quite long enough to accommodate 7.62x63mm.
>>
>>29354565

I like 30-06 because of the wide options available for it and the relatively low price point. Why would I want your, ?swedish? round?
>>

I'm saying it would be a very stretched FAL that you would have to make.

>>
>>29355281
Idk, the mag well would need to be like 1-2cm longer to accommodate the larger round. The longer chamber might also necessitate some additional length.
Idk, I pulling this all out of my ass, man.
>>
>>29355297
>1-2cm longer to accommodate the larger round
But the round is only 12mm or so longer, and I think the brass is the same width as the widest parts, or very, very close.
The chamber would have to be the same length longer. So it should only be longer by double the difference in the rounds' lengths. Roughly, 2 and a half cm.
>>
>>29355331
As I said, I'm pulling this all out of my ass. I figured in some extra length to account for larger, heavier, and potentially longer rounds in 30-06.
>>
>>29355487
Dude you don't even know wtf you're talking about a little bit. Potentially longer? lmao It's fucking 30 AUGHT 6 muh negro, of course it's longer. Uses any of the bullets .308 can, but alot more too. The width is effectively the same.

>>
>>29356043
It's looks above all else, I can't stand how scout scoped rifles look.
>>
>>29355986
When I buy a Lupold scope and vice the rifle in I will find out. However I did not build it to compete in 1000yrd competitions. I built it to be a 1-500 yrd rifle / hunting rifle.

If your looking for pinpoint accuracy I would probably go with a longer barrel. Maybe a fixed stock with a adjustable mono-pod. Rifle length gas system with a good Lupold scope. Harris bipod. That will cost you however. Remember I have about 700-750$ in this rifle.
>>
>>29356095
>That will cost you however. Remember I have about 700-750$ in this rifle
Yeah I get that, that's why I'm asking.

As I understand it, AR10s bring the best potential and inherent accuracy to the table of all the BRs. Or you get an AR10 if accuracy matters most to you. So I want to know what 700$ gets, because if it beats a PTR then fuck PTR.

It's been reliable then, no major AR-esque issues?

Also what did "I built this" actually consist of? Could You have made it for another caliber like 300wm or something bigger (not taking into account the magazine issues).
>>
>>29356204
It was a complete upper I got on sale with bcg and ch for like $289. The stripped lower and all parts to complete the lower cost about $230 with ffl and shipping. Remember to check what type of magazines the lowers take also. FYI I just did the math for everything. It was $685 for the complete setup.
>>
>>29356204
As much as I am a G3 fanboy, you can definitely build a better AR10 for less than a PTR.

>>
>>29357339
On some level I can get why people like the dirt cheap mags. But your going to get lemons. Yeah AR10 mags are like three or four times as much, but they are still cheap, and all work.

Im going to imagine if one is shopping for a sub $1000 rifle, your not the type who seriously is going to lay in a few hundred magazines and thousands of rounds of ammo. And if you plan on it later, your probably going to want a better rifle, or at the least better magazines. G3 mags while cheap, have ancient springs. AR10 mags have some really nice modern springs, and metallurgy has come a long way.
>>
>>29357417

Chrome silicon wires didnt really make an appearance in firearms magazines till like fifteen years ago.

Cast parts made in the 90s earned a poor reputation. Todays cast is as good as 90s forged. Things improve.

is the M1A the best battle rifle for Calicucks that don't wanna mutilate their gat with bullet buttons? if so, Scout or SOCOM?

I mean, it's still an objectively great rifle even if it's one of the only non-augmented battle rifle Commiefornia allows, right? Supposedly reliable, durable, battle-proven, still in service in some form with the US .mil, etc.

what would be lost by going with an M1A instead of the SCAR? what would be gained?

Not necessarily.
A DSA cali pattern FAL. Fixed mag, feed from strippers.

If you do you M1A, do not go socom. The short gas action on it is decidedly not ideal.

Scout, if you want to get maximum performance out of the 7.62x51 you don't want your barrel to be shorter than 18 inches. 18 inches is supposedly the sweet spot where you aren't losing enough velocity(vs a 20-24 inch barrel)for it to make a huge difference, and you've got better barrel harmonics(shorter barrel=less barrel flex)for more accurate follow up shots.
>>

meh, still don't like the idea of a FAL "fixed" to work in Cali. if something is intended originally for detachable mags, keep it that way and work with 10-rounders; for the same reason I wouldn't put detachable mags on an SKS either.

that img has me worried... does the M1A really have that bad of a rep or is it just a vocal minority? I seriously was under the impression that it was mad reliable - aside from the mechanically altered SOCOM - or was that just in comparison to the original M16 and its Vietnam history?

sounds like the M1A is really the only semiauto 308 worth buying in Cali though... just would help if I was assured that it was an objectively great rifle. kinda like how settling for the SKS over the AK isn't really that bad, since the SKS is a great weapon in its own right.

guess the Scout is the way to go too, I guess 2 inches can't be much of a hindrance when hauling the sucker around now can it? Springfield's website says the SOCOM and Scout both weigh the same too... not sure why though.
>>
>>29367016
The legend of the M14 is a lot grander than the reality. Yes, its still a fine rifle. But its not a hyper accurate rugged monster that kills commies by its mere presence within "muh riflemans quarter mile". The scout is the way to go not because of barrel length, but action length.

Well, if you dont mind reduced capacity mags, the SCAR is going to be more accurate, more reliable, more expensive, etc.

Fixed magazine (bullet button) doesnt allow the use of standard cap mags in california, in fact it makes it completely illegal. A magazine must be fixed if the rifle has "evil features" like a pistol grip or vertical foregrip. The only rifle that can legally use a standard cap mag here is one that is sporterized (no evil shit) like an m1a, mini14, or one of the monstergrip abomination ar15. Just be prepared with an explanation of where you got the mags before 2001
>>
>>29367066
thanks for the input

pretty sure the SCAR is out of the question sans bullet button due to the pistol grip and telescopic stock. although maybe bullet buttons aren't that bad, I've heard about the "mag magnet" that basically attaches to the bullet button and allows you to activate the mag release with a finger again
>>
>>29367016
Just get a standard length rifle. Barrel length is less of a concern than the stock and optic mount you put on it when it comes to weight.

M1A quality has been declining since they stopped using GI parts. If you just get your hands on a GI extractor, GI hammer and a couple other GI parts you will have 90% of issues fixed.

>Authors note: GI doesnt really have to be military surplus, you can use LRB or any other gucci brand. Just something higher quality than out of the box springfield.
>>
>>29367102
never said standard caps were allowed...

also, it's innocent until proven guilty, and the prosecution has to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the mags were bought after 2001, not the defendant proving otherwise. if you must say something, just say you found them in the woods on a hiking trip you took back in 2002
>>
>>29367109
Just dont get caught with it on your rifle. Law states that it can be used as a temporary tool to engage the bullet button and then removed from the rifle. If you leave it on there, even for a moment, you have just created an unregistered assault rifle and CA DOJ will fuck you in the ass because it can. Just be safe an get a radlock and adjust it to "out of state mode" when you are on private property

If you're not concerned about mounting a bayonet, CDNN still has the 16" Classic Wood in stock for $849. Again, no paddle release, but a lot cheaper. Otherwise, get the paddle-equipped GI or A3S from Atlantic Firearms and hunt for a wood furniture set; combined it still won't cost you $1300.

I feared a jamming M16 would get me killed, poison snakes, spiders and a jammed M16 was such a worry to me I opted to carry an M60 on my first LRRP patrol. Later I learned to love it. I hated the M14, it proved not as reliable and was heavier and I could not carry near enough of its ammo. When it comes to combat I would walk over 100 of the best M14s ever made for one good M16.”

The last one is mostly for safety.

Bedding.
The stock-reciever mating isnt very secure. To get around this a bedding material is used. These materials are not known for their durability.

Other issues are that the oprod action is geared for 150gr rounds of M80. Heavier ammo, specifically 175gr loads can cause the oprod to bend.
>>
>>29367662
Had those thoughts myself.
But im not sure that if I am putting rounds out, that I would be in a position where I could not fire a second round out for whatever reason.

You can go back to single fire. Its safe-semi-binary, like a select fire AR.
>>
>>29367669
Unless you go with a more modern stock that doesn't require bedding, like a JAE or SAGE, but be prepared to spend almost as much on those stocks as you did on the rifle.

As I understand it, the tac com has a 3rd mode where the bolt carrier pushes the trigger back into battery.

Essentially you could keep pulling back, and the trigger would keep reseting itself, and youd keep pulling the trigger.

Its another option.
>>
>>29368154
>tac con 3mr trigger
I doubt whether the 3rd fire mode is able to replicate FA reliably with stressed gross motor skills. Where as the echo types (shot on pull, shot on release) can replicate FA (as well as they can) even when you're a full retard.

I've never used either, so fuck me though.
>>
>>29367662
Yeah, you can pull the trigger, put the rifle on safe, release the trigger and it will not fire.

>The Echo Trigger is designed with safety being the utmost priority. When the shooter is in the Echo Mode and depresses the trigger one round is fired, if the target moves, the shooter can move the selector to the safe position and a second round will not fire upon release.

You realize you could easily find a low self esteem pretty boy faggot, right? They're in surplus since most don't want them. You literally don't have to be so pathetic that you white knight for a tripfaggot on the internet.

Battle Rifles, amirite?

Does anyone know if the 30-06 AR10s use the same bolt as a .308 AR10?
>>

>30-06
Do alot of people here have 30-06 BRs?

I was just about to ask how does one make a Garand able to shoot the highest pressure 30-06, I don't want to bend my op-rod.
>>
>>29371708

Adjustable gas plug homie
>>
>>29371751
So they really work? I just read through the advertisement for an allegedly better "ported" plug, said it needs no adjustments and was essentially self regulating. I was skeptical of all of them though.
>>
>>29371772

Yes, my buddy bought one for his so he could shoot new commercial ammo. New stuff all has higher pressures than surplus ball. Its a cheap way to extend the life of your rifle and to open up your ammo selection

saw this at the local pawn shop
any idea if its quality?
>>
>>29371800
I'm in love with 30-06, I wish there was a magazine fed proper BR in that caliber.

The BAR don't count for me.

imbel receivers 99% of the time worked

However, make sure to have the headspace checked before firing it
They're fairly easy to fix if they're out of headspace
