Lugers are fine guns and katanas are fine swords but there is this myth created by film and pop culture that Lugers are inherently superior or more powerful (see Indiana Jones shooting two Germans with one bullet with a captured Luger and looking at it with surprise and approval) in the same ways that Katana are depicted to be lighter, faster or sharper than other swords. They both have the cool factor and the "apex of ----" myth to them.
