There's this perception out there that Japan is "weird" due to many factors.

Do you buy that Japanese culture has more of these "weird" aspects to it than any other given culture? Or are a lot of these aspects just weird to outsiders because they're not used to it and would go for other cultures too?
>>
Japan is definately wierd. Sure you can say 'every country has its quirks' but even then Japan is farily unique in its combination of economic, political, cultural, etc. factor.
>>
No because they're different, just like Russians. There are lots of people within lots of cultures on a huge planet. Some parts of the world are simply completely different, different enough for us to say that "we don't understand this nonsensical shit from slavs or Japanese people do"

Lots of western countries don't understand certain cultural examples of the US, even though we are similar in lots of ways. Just like Americans like to laugh about backwards Europeans.

What Japanese people do and believe, is not inherently "weird". We only perceive it to be weird due to our own culture, experience and understanding of how the world works.

Japanese certainly do a lot of weird shit. So do Americans, so I don't know why they go "oh wacky Japan" so much.

Japan, USA, Russia, and France are definitely the top weird shit producers of the world.
>>
>>14454332
Some places you can just get away with more things. Japan just has a lot more of those "liberal" areas.

Like if you open up a maid cafe in Texas and San francisco you obviously know the one in Texas will go bankrupt in a month.
>>
Most weird shit from japan, the japanese will think it's weird too. It's just that really weird stuff gets publicated everywhere around the web and the normal stuff doesn't. If you look at the news you see violence and death everywhere, but it's actually just that the peaceful normal stuff isn't worth reporting on. Then there is that people are different in each country, for example I think that the US is backwards as fuck in some parts and the SJW shit is insanity in pure form. It can even be regional, like I think some of the things bavarians do is weird.
Bottomline, you wont see much weird stuff when you visit japan. It's just different.

What's France doing on your list?
>>
>>14454332
Japan being weird is a truism that gets repeated a lot because the people that are interested in Japan are weird. As >>14455257 said, a lot of the things that we see as weird in Japan, Japanese people do.
It is also much easier to see the weird aspects of a culture you don't have a connection with.
>>
Yes, because there's not as much of a stigma around "weird things".

Or rather, it's there, but disapproval (like every other emotion on earth) is not displayed as prominently since every good Japanese person always has their professional face on.
>>
I find western culture weird and I would feel traumatized if I had to go back to that
>>

SF is surprisingly bad for otaku culture. Japan Town is basically a ghost town with one shitty manga store, and all the conventions moved to other parts of the bay. If a maid cafe opened here it'd probably be protested every day for some misplaced sense of feminist outrage.
>>

Well, asian here. I must say that 90's american stuff creeps me out sometimes, like those garbage can kids, I don't really remember the name. America has just so much weird shit, but it seems that people there is used to it so they don't even notice.

Maybe it's just the same in every country.
>>
>>14455561
The Garbage Pail Kids?

I am American and I don't understand why anyone would buy that shit.
>>
>>14455574
People seem to have a really shaky grasp on what kids might like.

The younger the kid, the stronger the effect. Once you start trying to market to toddlers, you get otherworldly hellspawn like Teletubbies.

The Japs know they're being wacky and are doing it on purpose.

Why don't people in Texas like weird things?

>It's just that really weird stuff gets publicated everywhere
Why is Japan a favorite target for this? Like why not report on how Indians do weird shit

> I think that the US is backwards as fuck

The thing is, backwards is a bit different than "weird" IMO. One understands backwards, like not accepting the glorious statecraft of the autocrats as being what is good for you, but one does not understand a man going to a restaurant with 3 squidgirl dolls and ordering something for each of them.

Maid cafes aren't even that weird. The US has bikini coffee stands and those sports themed barber shops where the girls dress up as cheerleaders. I'd even say that maid cafes are less weird than bikini coffee stands, because the maid cafe exists to provide a kind of service that doesn't exist elsewhere, while the point of a bikini coffee stand is just coffee for creeps.

Besides maid cafes, most "weird Japanese shit" is self-published, and you can find the exact same kind of shit outside of Japan by browsing vanity press books and Patreons.

As someone who lives in the US I don't habeeb this

Dude have you been to Texas? It's full of fucking weebs. And I don't even mean Austin. There are people who have lived on ranches all their lives and talk about their favorite moe anime and show off their favorite figures while cows are mooing outside. It's surreal.
>>
>>14458335
Can you prove this?
>>
>>14458335
Well, Texas has A-kon, a pretty large anime convention. And others, like A-fest and whatnot.

As a fellow Texas-anon, I can say this is somewhat true.
There's a lot of weebs in Dallas, and I assume Austin, as well.
Once these weebs go to their homes in the more rural parts of the state, you can see what >>14458335 described.
On the other hand, it's not like every rancher has a waifu and a figure collection.

So, the smellfags finally reveal themselves.. I can see it starting as a joke, then culturally evolving into a phenomenon. Weird, but even funnier when you take it seriously.

Anon, that's an AV.
If anything, everyone eles porn is repressed.

If it's some weird as fuck movie/cartoon and it isn't Russian or Japanese, you can be sure it's French.

From what? Weeb sites like Kotaku and Sakanku Complex?

Besides Indians have their weird shit like making "every" movie a musical, and copying American movies and making them musicals, and shitting all over the ground everywhere. There's also the yoga and Kama Sutra memes. (Yoga as in being skinny and tying their bodies into knot like shapes and meditating)

Smellfaggotry isn't a joke if you know anything about asian culture and biology.
