Does anyone else get disconnected from Tenhou more often recently?
I haven't gotten disconnected once for about a year or so, but 3 or 4 times in the last week and it's getting annyoing.

Also what is considered a good tie-call-rate?

I was thinking today would be a good day to play mahjong and then I got up and lost 3 games consecutively.
>>
>>15272606

Tokujou main has .318 call rate and .201 riichi rate.

Alt is sitting on 46 games and is one win away from escaping ippan hell with .341 call rate and .210 riichi rate. Only been playing tonpuusen on this one, though.

If there were a mahjong client and server to which you could make custom riichi and non-riichi mahjong rules to, what would you like the format to be like?

Something like rc?
tileshand=13
riichi=YES

Something like XML?
<tileshand val="13"/>
<riichi val="true"/>
or
<tileshand>13</tileshand>
<riichi>true</riichi>

Something like CSV?
tileshand,13
riichi,1

Keep in mind that the format may also be used to make mahjong yaku/hands/scoring charts, unless I also make a form of regex for mahjong tiles.
>>
What do you do when you've got bad flow?
>>
>>15274707
you stop playing
>>
>>15274707
Take a break, clear your mind, don't go into games with the "This time for sure" or "I'll make back what I lost" mentality.
>>
>>15274707
First and foremost watch the replays and figure out what is going wrong. Were you just unlucky with the discards after a riichi or were you dealing into obvious honitsu?

After that just take a break and calm down. An hour is usually enough if you were just unlucky. If you are making stupid mistakes just stop for the day, you are probably tired.
>>
>>15274707
yes, stop for the day or at least do something else for a couple of hours before coming back.
also, never play when its late and youre sleepy, never play if youre even slightly drunk, never play if theres too many things around you distracting you
>>
>>15274659
Also, since this program would be available in both source and binary, it would work on operating systems without Adobe Flash, unlike tenhou.
>>
>>15274659
personally, i have no actual preference. im more used to xml-like, but the other true are pretty simple too. xml looks more organized
>>
>>15275232

>>
>>15272535
>ragequitting
I hope none of you lot ever do this. Showing such complete lack of respect for the other three people is just about the only thing that will really set me off.

Yes, mahjong can be very frustrating at times. I'm hardly immune to it myself. But instead of turning the game into shit, try to recover. If nothing else, playing with a shoddy mental state is just about the only way to practice tilt management and the experience can be very useful in the long run. Not to mention the incredible feeling when managing to pull off a comeback after being pummeled left and right and having had multiple haneman+ hands denied.
>>
>>15275855
If ragequitting is too tempting to resist, maybe one can try tonpuusen games. Games are over in a flash, anyways, and one can make miraculous recoveries.

http://tenhou.net/0/?log=2016052216gm-0001-0000-f267be2c&tw=3

This was the first time in 8 games I'd dealt in, but I grit my teeth and recovered. Also the last game I had to play in ippan. I've reached civilization at last.
>>
>>15274256
How many fucking games do you play each month? That's amazing, congrats mate. Maybe you'll be the first person I know from these threads that will reach Houou if you exclude fake GOGO and fake Hei that is.

My older daughter (around koume's age) likes to play with my tiles. I have her draw and discard when I practice my tile efficientcy. She will yell LOOK IT'S HAKU! whenever it pops up. Mainly due to the character from spirited away. She pon'd a eight sou yesterday, randomly.

She'll ask me if I'm losing if she sees me on tenhou, even if im in the lead.

I'll teach her basics in a few years

>>
>>15279974
nothing there seems to be really safe. sou tiles seem to be pretty depleted but someone can still be waiting on 58s as there's still three 6s and two 7s unaccounted for.
pin looks super dangerous. the 4 is probably safe but that 2 is not.
actually what looks less dangerous here is the man tiles, specifically 4 and 6, so i'd go with that if i wanted to fold. if you don't want to fold, probably i'd go with 5s.
how did it turn out?
>>
>>15279974
All your hand looks awful from a defense standpoint, but pushing is equally awful since it's either a 3tile 6sou wait (9sou fucking up your yaku) or a furiten pair wait.

Shit. I'd go 4man, but it's a crapshoot
>>
>>15279974
Well, I wouldn't have called in the first place, because of the chance of furiten if you drew a 9s. But at that point, I'd say fuck it and discard the 8s.

Like a dumbass I dealt into the biggest hand. I wasn't sure about putting down any manzu tiles because I thought dealer was aiming for honitsu but now that I look at it again they are the least dangerous according to everyone's discards.

I called to avoid the noten payment, if I happened to draw a 6s it would've been a bonus.
>>
>>15280234
>I called to avoid the noten payment, if I happened to draw a 6s it would've been a bonus.

That's usually understandable, but in this scenario you had a dealer with a doubleton + another call, and with no visible dora in the table. Calling reduces the tiles you can fold with, while also reducing your will to fold since you're in the pushing mindset. Sometimes it's best to just fold.

please criticize. i only dealt 2500 points in 13 rounds and still ended fourth. luck only goes so far so i clearly fucked up in a way i'm not really noticing.
>>
>>15283069
E1 you abandoned there really wasn't a reason to press the sex button and there was no reason to hold the 6 pin (even if you hit the 7 you are now in furiten). You would have had a 5543 the very next draw which as dealer is certainly good enough for dealer riichi.

true. i realized reaching was a mistake as soon as i did it, but didn't notice that previous mistake til now
>>
>>15283092
E2-1 I would have bailed (it wouldn't have mattered here but still). You weren't going to make anything and dealer is obviously close to tenpai with an open hand.

Probably didn't need the sex button on E4, but that's more a playstyle choice.

South 3 there was no reason to drop the 4 man that early 2344 is a really nice shape. You dealt in anyway ignoring that the dealer already had the other 2 567 runs. Not a huge mistake because the hand was open, but still a mistake especially into the dealer while you are in 4th.
>>
>>15283069
Your single biggest problem is your tendency to wreck your hand as soon as you reach iishanten. It's as though you've already decided on the final shape of your hand and won't accept anything else. You won't always get your ideal tenpai. Learn not to do this and you'll avoid a lot of backfired discards, and you'll be able to complete hands more often.

The next biggest problem is that you pretty clearly go on tilt when things don't go your way, and your overall tile efficiency takes a nosedive as a result. You also riichi when you shouldn't.
>>
>>15283132
>>15283169

great advice. thanks a lot.

i'm guilty of going on tilt. i became pretty frustrated during that game and it showed. i also tend to become pretty desperate when i'm fourth, which doesn't help to get out of it.
>>
>>15283069
>i only dealt 2500 points in 13 rounds

Well shit.

Somehow managed to come back and win, but I really didn't see that one coming. Guess I could have bailed, but with only 1 call I figured he wasn't even in iishanten.
>>
>>15292862
I don't think you really had the hand to bail. You have 7m and maybe 8m since he didn't call it. Two turns -might- buy you enough time to get more safe tiles, but it could just as likely not. Your hand wasn't looking bad, either, so being hesitant to bail is understandable.

>>
>>15293897
He was probably rushing to tenpai but drew the 4m. Would you really put down a live 4m in that situation? Two people have their hands open and your toimen hasn't put down any manzu tiles.
>>
>>15293897
Waiting on the dora gives him Mangan instead of 7700 or 9600 (if he tsumos). Plus, dropping the dora that late into the game against two yakuhai open hands is risky because people are most likely to wait on it.
>>
>>15293897
>people already think he's going for honitsu
He discarded 4 man tiles, what kind of honitsu is that?
>>
>>15294382
Ron on 7s would also be 50 fu, so 9600 points. Pretty good corner case example.
>>
>>15294483
Ron on 7s isn't 50 fu, it's 40 fu. 20 from winning hand, 16 from open 1m kan, 4 from open ton.
>>

10 fu from ron
>>
>>15294555

Don't worry about it, friend. I should maybe have mentioned explicitly why it's 50 fu, as that is easy to overlook.

Keep playing until you feel comfortable enough to play humans.

And don't fear the apps. Go ahead and install 'em.
>>
>>15297316
Use the Game Design one, Maujong for mobile is ok too. You can even play vs computers mode on Tenhou.

As long as you know your yaku you can jump into Tenhou. Ippan (the first room) is filled with terrible players. You might need to throw away the account eventually, but you should be fine.

7447 is anywhere from high ippan to low tokujou (3rd room) depending on who is in there.

If you afraid of getting reamed by 7447 players, hold off until you can get to 1 Kyuu.

Not sure which one be the culprit.
I've been winning 2-3% less since 3dan without much difference in deal-in rate. It went up a bit after I played recklessly.

In fact, maybe I should play even crazier. Need to get yakuman'd at least once.

Likely 4th place games that you salvage into 3rds are the most valuable kind.
>>
If you have a 4-6-8 shape and discarding one of them puts you in tenpai are you supposed to discard the 4 or the 8? Also is it better on Tenhou to get mostly 1sts and 4ths rather than 2nds and 3rds?
>>
>>15303632
4 insta-richi or 8 dama if you have no yaku/dora
>>
>>15303632
Discarding 4 gives you a suji trap, discarding 8 lets you use a red dora if you draw it. If you don't have a sanshoku and neither 4 or 8 are dora, you should go for the one you think has the highest chance of being dealt.

In Tenhou, if you're trying to increase your Rate and rank up, getting anything but 4th place is your goal, due to it having the largest penalty.

Discarding 8 you can draw 7 or 3 to get a ryanmen, while discarding 4 you can only draw a 5 for a ryanmen.
If you're not going to insta-riichi you should discard 8.
>>
I think mahjong guides for beginners should stop teaching people about suji and shit. It's honestly not that important for defense. It's far more important to know when to defend, rather than how to defend. Just dealing 100% safe tiles like furiten and impossible waits gets you so far you won't even need suji until you're experienced enough to be able to reason out defense strategies like that on your own.

I think if you start focusing on things like suji too early you'll start playing like "oh maybe I can still push this hand since the tile I need to discard is suji". That sort of thinking is what you have after you've lost 10 games and are seething with rage thinking you're gonna win back what you've lost. It's what you want to avoid. People would benefit more from advice like "betaori if someone riichi's before you".
