Take Heavy Metal, for example. As a previous moshpitter and long time hobbyist musician, let me tell you, metal musicians get worshiped in a very similar fashion, though the infringements are different.
This example is from way before my time (or well, from around the time I was born, but still), but metal fans still despise KISS. They hate started after they put out their disco record. Because metal musicians should not play disco. Because metal musicians are supposed to be deities. Just like japanese idols are supposed to be deified, and if you've seen any SSK, you can't tell me they aren't.

What I use to base my opinions on this is Jung's Psychology and Religion (and related books, discussing our innate need to have religion as an ancestral means of survival of the specias) and (funny enough) Dawkin's The Selfish Gene and Nice Guys Finish First (which discuss the evolutive development of some characteristics of our personality, and can be plugged straight into Jung's earlier assertions on religion). Jung's book from half a century prior to Dawkins' taps perfectly into it to explain that our brain needs religion in order to more easily survive.
But we now have lots of information. We now know that the gods don't make lightning. So we lose religion, and a very important part of our psyche. But we can still worship something else. And we do, though most of us are unaware.
