Only Volks has their dolls mass produced in China. Other companies do not.
Look their factory is in Guangzhou, and employees 300 workers there to cast all the dolls hence why there are so many flaws and fuck ups.

Azone is good quality. If she doesn't come with a pack of extra hands you may want to get some, they're fairly inexpensive for the parts just so she isnt stuck in permanent jazz-hands pose. Pure Neemo/Ex Cute is a good size to collect, its easy to find clothing that fits them and accessories are plentiful. I do find it a little frustrating sometimes to pose them as expressively as my bigger dolls, and it is trickier to sew for them, but if that isn't a major concern to you you'll probably be completely happy with them.

Are there many professional photographers/camera otakus? Why is it that all my pictures always feel like they have way more noise than they should? I keep the ISO as low as possible and use as much external lighting as I can get. How much post-processing do you do? Your camera doesn't seem to be that bad, and your lens seems fast enough for normal use. Aside from post-processing, you could also try taking photos with more foreground/background separation, whether by space or by lighting.
Have you tried taking photos of your doll outside? That should tell you if it's just a matter of not having enough lighting.

I do very little post-processing, I do take the pictures in .RAW format just to fine tune the WB, exposure and colors as needed but that's about the extent of what I know how to do properly. I'll look for some guides on to work on these skills.
I haven't done any outdoors shot yet so I'll give that a try this weekend.

If you want a childlike shota then honestly the MDD or the similarly sized Obitsu/Parabox/Azone body (i think its 42cm?) with whatever head you like will be fine. At that age anime children pretty much look identical except for hair and clothes, especially if you want it feminine. Most MDD have the DDH01 sculpt because its smaller and large eyed. The only way you'd know it isn't a boy is that it wont have a penis (I'm not sure on the MDD but from what I've seen Obitsu/Parabox and likely Azone are all flat as a Barbie down there so it won't have labia either). And honestly if that really bothers you theres people in the BJD hobby that do genderswapping/dick-replacements.
Also, if you're willing to go resin theres some other anime style options that do come with fully male bodies. 2D Doll has a 42cm boy named Colin, or you could order the body itself and put one of their girl heads on it. Luts also has two anime style boys in that size (Kid Delf, they're the "animation style" category). I also think you can use certain SQ heads on that scale but they don't have a boy body so you'd have to look into what other companies have matching resin.

I was under the same impression too, I have a single Leekeworld wig and it doesn't have any such problems although it is a simple feminine short cut. The only reason I haven't bought another one is because they seem permanently sold out of naturalblack in all the good styles. But I guess the pictures tell a story, maybe it's just that particular model that's poor quality, or maybe just the one I got was unusually not shit.
Never understood clip-on ponytails. I'd rather take a long straight wig and ponytail it myself. The only thing holding me back is finding suitably small hair ties since all my ponytailers are A) way too big B) scattered around the house waiting for the cat to dig them out.

If you have to buy everything and start from scratch it's gonna be 100x cheaper and faster to get someone who already has the equipment and skills to do it. You're gonna need tools to modify the head (mini dremel tool, hand files, sand papers etc), paints (not cheap ones either) specialised brushes, and a clear sealant and the correct protective equipment needed when using all these things (unless you plan on being ~**HARDCORE**~ and snort MSC all day erry day like that chick on tumblr)
Plus if you're an artist that means you can't use stuff made for men such as the die grinder you'll need so you'll be starting from scratch there too. You'll be buying more than one head that I can guarantee.
By all means experiment and play around and learn. But your first few dozen attempts won't be the quality you want. If you're only doing it once, don't, and just get someone to do it for you. As an artist you should at least be able to build a good relationship with the artist you choose based on your common interests.

where to start, huh
well obviously you'll have to reshape the head. start by use a SHARP hobby knife to shave most of the mouth off, followed by low grit sandpaper/ sanding stick.i don't like using sandpaper because its less uniform, I only use to get to specific areas and sculpting. sand till you get the mouth off and the shape you want. For the eyes, draw out what you want to cut, then cut bellow the line leaving material to finalize the shape with rolled up sand paper and small files. make sure when your done sculpting that you leave a smooth finish with high grit sandpaper because paint and particles can get stuck in scratches left behind by low grit sandpaper.

Yes and no. There's plenty of doll stores in Japan, but if you want to create your own the only one I'm sure of is the Volks stores. I'm not sure how much its changed recently but I think the Sato store is the one with the most options. I don't believe you can walk out of there with the doll that day, as they put it in the queue to be painted by the company artists but you do get a greater control over what you're getting.
Also fyi that doll in your pic is silicone, not a bjd. She looks like a Candy Girl maybe.

If you're ok with rubber, most dollar stores or cheap retailers (Walmart and such) will have them in various natural and rainbow mix colors. The rainbow ones will be in with the little-girly hair clips, but the natural colors may be closer to the ethnic care since they're usually for braiding. If you want covered elastic, just go to your nearest fabric or crafting store and look for round elastic in a suitable thickness and color, buy a pack (or a yard or two if its sold by length) and then cut and knot together as you need it.
Also dollar store little girls hair stuff is often good scale for doll stuff anyway, I got a ton of tiny in scale hair clips there before.

Different anon, consider getting a cheap used head off Ebay to practice with before doing your own doll. Vinyl stains like a bitch and is tricky to cut and finish well so you want something you can hack into to start with. It won't cost much, even a brand new Obitsu head is only $20.

ooohhh. Shit. I would've started at 1000, worked my way up to 3000. 100's are way way too heavy for anything of the sort. that's more of a 30 second scratch at that level with that material than a 15 minute aggressive polish entering the 1000's grit.

220 grit was mainly used to shave the mouth and nose down. also forgot to mention you have to shave some of the nose off.
if you started with 1000 grit, you'd sit there for a week sanding it. you don't have to start as low as i did, you can start with some thing like 400 if you feel more comfy using it.

The black stockings from Volks blue collection have been good so far but in general it really is a hit and miss. I have had an entire body be stained all over from a maid outfit, it was a disaster.

Honestly since they're so cheap and not meant to be reused, you can avoid all that ripping-your-scalp-out mess and just nip them out. Scissor blade slid underneath and pressed up into the rubber will usually slice them right apart without damaging the hair at all. Or just use the elastic tip that I also posted.
